I am heading down to texas, lubbuck to be precise (hell hole of texas) and am plaining on bass fishing. Any bass flies people recommend? I have never fished for bass so any tactics I should use? I am also thinking of heading to canyon lake, renting a rod am maybe going after GAR. Anyone tried catching these beasts?

Check out the banks of the water you are fishing for small frogs and match otherwise use crawdads or wooley buggers in varying colors depending on the stain and/or clarity of the water. If it has catfish use dog or cat food.

I am actually looking at bow fishing for gar. Those things are huge.

Noodling for gar. That's something you're not going to try more than once. A suggestion: use your non-casting hand.

Have a floating and sinking line with you.

Bass flies to use: Simi seals, Dahlberg divers, poppers (if they're up in the evenings. This may not be the time for it. I don't know Texas) Trail your big bug with a little bug too little nymph, damsel, whatever. Lots of times you'll start busting fish on the little one more than the big one. It also lets you catch some bluegill while you're targeting bass if the action isn't super fast. Diamond hair minnow (there's a shop in AZ that ties and sells these. I'm getting the materials, but don't have them yet)
There are lots of others. Come by the shop on Tuesday and I'll show you some more.

go on top with dahlberg divers, strip and settle method especially in the evenings. I know you will be in lubbock but there are some striper options with some travel on your fly rod... shoot me an e-mail. lived in dallas for 3 years...

Instead of bow fishing for Gar, try teasing them with a yarnie. They bite on it and their teeth get tangled up. I hear it is pretty killer. Might want to bust out the 9 or 10 wt. though.

Todd's wiggle minnow, sneaky petes, and a collection of hoppers and poppers for on top. Shad patterns, Bunny streamers, clousers, and big buggy rubber legged buggers below. Mono-weed guards can be indispensable and easy to tie on to flies you already have. Spring is your best time to tie into big bream too so don't forget smaller flies, nymphs and a 3 weight. I've caught several gar on the fly rod and while the hookless frayed nylon rope thing works, I had better luck with sharpt sw hooks and strip setting like a mutha.
