Going to Yellowstone April 11-18. I heard that fishing season is closed at that time? Anyone know the area....I guess I know that it is flyfishing Mecca to some, but I have no idea about it and don't want to get a guide.

Near West Yellowstone, outside of the Park, you have the Madison and Gallatin that are open.

The weather up here is tons of snow....10 inches last night....Yellowstone Park closed to snow travel yesterday and is not scheduled to open to vehicles till March 18... I'm not sure it will open then unless.... I have over 6 feet of snow at my cabin in the trees.... As far as the Madison it closes from Quake lake to the bridge each year for the rainbow spawn so check out the proclimation to be sure...Also pack some snow shoes if you plan to get close to a river......

the park doesn't open for fishing until memorial day-- some of the best waters don't go until july.......

if you're in that area, and want to fly fish, i'd do what others have suggested and go with the madison or gallatin (ask the shops in ennis where to access them)..... other options include either the beaverhead or maybe even the missouri below holter-- little further away but both are tailwaters that should give up some nice fish.......

wade park area of the madison has some nice pocket water, otherwise it's mostly riffles........ gallatin has nice canyon pocket water fishing-- just pull over somewhere between big sky and bozeman that isn't too hairy.... i'd consider bringing a wading staff along for either river, esp. the gallatin.....

none of these are going to give you the "flyfishing yellowstone" type experience you are probably looking for....... return later in the summer, get a book or two-- the one by molinero is good........ and fish to your heart's content....... there's water everywhere.....

best advice is change the dates of your trip.

other options include either the beaverhead

Just an FYI to that ... You could fish below Pipe Organ, but not at the dam.

"Clark Canyon Dam To Pipe Organ Bridge - Open third Saturday in May through November 30."

I was up there a few years back when the rivers were closed and no kidding some dipshit was standing out in the river (can't remember what river it was) fishing all by himself. You could be like that genious and just go for the gold.

Check with Kelly Galloup at www.slideinn.com. The Madison might be your best bet.
