hey all you self proclaimed pro rod builders...... well any of you that kinda know what your doing, I have come into a custom built rod that just above the cork has a name in it that is written on the blank and is under the lacquer finish, I was wondering what I can have done to take it off if anything. and no it didn’t come out of anyone’s truck while they were out on the lake, it was obtained legit. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know that it would be wise to try removing it, but you can always do a decorative butt wrap or even a regular wrapping job over the top and re-apply finish over that.

Curtis is right, wrapping over it is going to be your best and easiest bet. If you'd like some cool ideas or have any questions or need help let me know.
If you don't want to cover it up here is what I'd do. Tape off the section with scotch tape so you can sand the area you want o remove. Sand it with a very high grit paper to get the majority of the finish off. Once the finish is off you need sandpaper or an abraisive pad that will very lightly take the remaining finish off and remove the name. Be very careful to not remove the actual rod material. Once you've got it off you'll have to apply as many thin coats of finish. I suggest using a urethane finish like U-40 permagloss or use a thin build finish and thin it with denatured alcohol. This way you can best match the original finish on the blank.
Good luck. I'd like to see before and after pics.
this wont help you, but what I do on a custom rod is lay down three coats of rod finish, then inscribe. in that manner, I can sand off the inscription at a later date and not touch the rod finish...

Is it under the original rod finish or epoxy finish like the wraps? Heat it up with an alcohol lamp and scrape it with your fingernail.... over and over again for about an hour. Be careful... but that can work.

I have pulled off finish with a hair dryer and my finger nail. after a minute the finish gets soft and will peel back. It's slow but works. if the name was written on the blank rubbing alchol will pull the ink off. I would be afraid to sand it, I dont think you would ever get the origional look back.
