View Full Version : Your favorite Little Yellow Sally pattern?
This winter has been a great tying winter for me. I've been working on re-stocking my fly boxes recently. I'm done with Baetis, PMD's, Caddis, Terrestials, Midges, Flav's, Green Drakes and Mahagony's, and nymphs. Next up: Stonefly's, Damsels, and Carp patterns.
I need to add some yellow sally patterns to my collection and I don't have any good yellow sally patterns that I like. I've tried a few different patterns but nothing I really like yet.
Which yellow sally patterns do you like?
Also, if I remember right Yellow Sally's are one of the few stoneflys that emerge mid river. They don't crawl out like most of their cousins. I don't know this for sure and I could be completly off here. If someone knows for certain could you confirm if they do emerge mid river?
Thanks for your help.

And find out if it has to have the red butt.
I use two patterns but I'm the only one using them because they are weird.
1) Little Twister Sally (pale yellow foam and a red sharpie)
2) Air-filled Sally (pale yellow with hand-colored markings)
The best hatch and fishing I have had with a Sally hatch was on the Blacksmith Fork of all places. These little fellers were fluttering all around the water and the trout were looking for them. Fun.
I would imagine a Stimulator would work in the right color and size and maybe a simple elk hair caddis and it seems like Cheech had a Palimino looking pattern with a red butt. Check it out on his blog: www.flyfishfood.blogspot.com

I was typing too long. Cheech beat me to it. The one he posted is the one I saw. Looks simple and good.

What size hook ya using Cheech? Would a "Bodiz" body work for this tie?

Been using a #16 to #12. I bet a BOdiz would be sick. How buoyant are they?

been tying up sallies today as a matter of fact. While watching Bob Quigleys tying DVD I noticed that he ties a great sally pattern.I think it's just called the hackle stacker yellow sally, looks like a great fly and easy to tie.
Another sally pattern I have found to work well is an emerger pattern that I stumbled upon last summer. Shoot me an email and I'll give ya the recipe. Cheech's sally looks like a winner too

Not as buoyant as foam, I imagine, but I'll bet it would work, and it would be less troublesome. Is a Sally a brighter yellow than a PMD Bodiz?
