Marty, I took your photo and matched it up to the histogram in CS3 to correct the exposure a bit. I also hit the image with a sharpen. This is the result:

There are a number of different ways you could correct this issue. It is best to get the settings down on your exposure with the camera but the shot is nice!

And the photo with an overlay....
You can still see a bit of softness on the edges of the feather, however it is still a great shot!

In regards to lens's, what kind of budget? There are some really nice ones to choose from.

Sheesh Marty, you definitely have more patience at the vice than what I should be attaining anytime soon. I am impressed with your devotion to traditional salmon flies. It is pretty cool to see them when they get posted.

JayMorr from now on I will take the shot and send it to you for developing, that awesome. $500 or les for a lens would be great.

JayMorr OK so clue us all in. What is a histogram in CS3 and what program are you using to do the overlay.

Hey Jaymorr-

I love you PS skills, you are very good! As a graphic designer by trade I am super curious about the font you use in signatures, I've got some great ideas in mind to use it, would you mind telling me the font name?

The CS3 he is referring to is Adobe Photoshop (version) CS3.

As for a histogram, most higher-end digital cameras support a histogram feature that can be displayed before or after you take a photo. Though it looks like a complex chart, a histogram is merely a representation of an image's brightness, and whether or not it has rich shadow and highlight areas. In a editing program like Photoshop, you can adjust the histogram of an image to darken/lighten the image for better output.

Thanks bushrat! Shoot me an email and I will give you the details on the font:
jasonmorr@gmail.com I appreciate your comments. I do not have any formal/school training when it comes to graphic design. Everything I have learned has been through trial and error, study of books, vids and my boss who has been somewhat of a mentor to me. He graduated from BYU in graphic design and has pulled me in and shown me stuff when he does the marketing stuff for our company. He is not a full time graphic designer by trade and runs a company, however he is very talented and skilled and has shown me sooooo much. He has a great eye and is able to contructivly make me better on my projects. I hope to take some classes here shortly that will smoothen out my skillz and help me greatly.

Marty, the overlay was applied in CS3 it was around 20%

Marty in regards to lens's, a couple of options for you:
Canon 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM
Check out the Canon EF-S 60 mm F2.8 macro lens

and something that has been touted as a really good lens without the price tag because of the plastic mount instead of the metal mount:
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Camera Lens (You can pick this Prime up for around $100ish or less.) Here is a place to see some samples:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00007E7JU/ref=pd_cp_p_1?pf_rd_p=250314001&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00006I53V&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=0MNJDYVNEKG3GYKP84XA

I hope this helps. I would probably get the 50mm for the money Marty. You will be suprised how nice your shots turn out at a distance of 18inches ;)

Marty here's that 50mm lens Jay's talking about. I can send you some other pictures by email that's a little larger if you'd like. Check out the detail. The nice thing about this lens (even thou it's not a macro) it playing with the depth of field. Good low light lens for the price too.
Maybe this will work

Marty, I just took it outside Sunday and put it on the garden landscape timber, and clicked away. Natural sunlight. I guess there's still some ice/snow or ? on the timber.

Dude's it's the camera. And I got the older newer one. The plain old XT
Check out Doug's (Bugeye) website for kick ass photo's too. I try to rip off his style too. Low and slow.
I think Bugeye and Jaymorr should have a photo class for those of us that are Kodachromically challenged.
Now how about that for the Wasatch Fly Tying Expo.
Have a photographing fly fishing related class for everone. Fly Photos 101, how to get a good shot on the water, using available light, water etc. Using a tripod, lightbox etc...... Filters for effects
