We're going to Orlando in May, and I'm wondering if anybody's done any fishing in the area. I know that it's possible to book time on the resort lakes, but it's over $200 for a 2 hour session on a pontoon boat (up to 5 anglers). Would love to hit the salt for reds, snook & specs, but I don't know if we'll have the time with all the family obligations. Anybody here done any DIY or guided local fishing outside of the resort?

Nick, I thought the expensive rides stopped at the outer boundries of disney...guess I was wrong. I would be interested in what you find out, I think a trip to florida next spring would be a good winter buster.

I've fished the Inland Waterway on the east coast near Cape Canaveral. Lots of fish of all kinds there. Also, almost every canal has fish in it of some type or the other. I'm sure they would rise to a fly.

You might ask the same question over on the FAOL board. Lots of folks from Florida on there that might give you a heads up.

I'd be scoping the canals etc. I know Orlando is further north, but down in Ft. Lauderdale and surrounding regions the Peacock Bass are all the rage. Not sure how easy they will be to locate further north. From what I heard, they are everywhere in the small ponds and canals down there.

That peacock bass sure looks perdy. I wouldn't mind trying that out. First Florida, and then on to Brazil!

Lewie, I would ask at FAOL, but I was banned for saying "I disagree".

Peacocks aren't around as far north as Orlando. They're no further north than the Miami area. Wish they were though. They'd kick Mickey's trash.

The Communist state of FAOL... LOL. I was reading a thread over there about how all step by step fly tying posts from members were being deleted because it interfered with their coveted fly of the week. I admit that there have been some great flies of the week over there, but as of late there have been some real dogs.

Check out this week's offering. (It has been up for several weeks). Am I missing something here.

Anyway, back to the Florida thingy. I was talking to several locals at a shop in Ft. Lauderdale and they have Peacocks in that area (a bit further north of Miami). If I were you I'd do everything I could to hook a snook. Florida Largemouth would be a close second.

I've done peacocks in Peru & snook in Mexico (them's some badass fish!), but no redfish, speckled trout or FL LMB. Haven't done big tarpon yet either, and we will be there at the start of the pime season.

Isn't the FlyAnglerOverLord awesome?
