You mean this bullet head tool? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5sl6x-tvCw

Yeah, it's super duper.

A drinking straw works as good or better, and costs a ton less. Stef uses them as part of her regular demonstration program. Not sure, but I think it's on the Tying With The Experts DVD that Cache Anglers produced a couple of years ago.

I like using the clear plastic original Bic pen bodies. You can trim the tapered end for different sizes & the clear tube let's you see how the actual head is looking.

These look cool though, I may have to give them a try.

The thing that rocks about the bullethead tool is that is has a flexible rubber dam inside of the hard plastic ring. No Mickey Dee's straw can hang with that. They work great for holding stuff out of the way while you finish the rest of the fly as well.

Grizz, I saw them at SW awhile ago and at the time I wasnt sure what they were until recently. They were asking a couple of bucks for the set of 3.

It works if you have a smart dog...

I think SW has them, maybe Fish tech.

cheech,

do you find the tool to be of great benefit? It seems that it would hold the materials out of the way & allow the fly-tier to work on both sides. Is it as durable as an old Bic pen housing? How rigid is the rubber dam material?

Worth the 3 or so bucks (for 3 sizes). Makes for a very easy, neat bullethead. Fast too. Very durable. Can double as a frisbee, mini coaster, duck call, eye patch, or spare tire.

To be honest, I really don't tie a ton of bullet heads. When I do, this tool is always in use.

Grizz, I just got back from SW and they still have a few there. They cost me $5.99 for the pack of 3. As Cheech stated the center is plenty durable. With your good looks you should get them cheaper than I did. ;)

I also started using these about a year ago when Cheech first started filming some of his tying using them. I had not seen anything like it before and was amazed how much better my bullet heads looked on all my flies. Like he mentioned the rubber gasket inside makes it much nicer then the straws or clear tubing I was using in the past!

The rubber gasket snaps back applying pressure on the material holding it in place. Great product and well worth the $3-6 bucks I paid for them. The pack comes with 3 different diameters.

I bought a set of these tools about 10 years or so ago from the old "Flyline" in Ogden. Great little tool. Glad to see it pop up again. I tie most patterns that call for bullet-heads with foam now so haven't used the tool much anymore.

Oops. My mistake. It was actually Anglers' Inn in Ogden.
