View Full Version : Just an idea...

Wow. Looks like another thread got nuked. That's cool. I was going to post what I've written below in that thread, but alas it is no longer. So it looks like I've got to set up my post below with some ground work.

It seems like a lot of folks aren't happy with with they are getting out of a basically free site these days. That's too bad. To those folks, I'd say, a site like this is what you make it. If you don't like the signal to noise ratio, raise it. Post something worth while then. Why should you just get to free load off the others here. It's the same folks that come here over and over saying "there's on good info on UTOF anymore", yet do nothing to contribute to the site except posts complaining about "how there's no good info on UTOF anymore". Even those with limited knowledge or are new to the sport have, I'm sure, made worth while observations. Share them.

In my eyes, the problem here, is there is basically nothing new here. I mean, how many times can we talk about prono river bounce rigs, or what pontoon to buy, how tubers suck, or how to tie a parachute Adams? It's all here if you take the time to click the "Search" button. For those of us who this isn't our first UTOF rodeo, we see a post like that and it's Yawn!!!! So we revertback to the 12-13 year olds that most grown men can be, and it's beavis and butthead time. It's just fishing, don't take it so seriously. If some folks want to have fun with it, let them.

So, as a result, I've got a radical idea that might liven this place up. Let's lift the ban on hot spotting. Yes, I said it. Obviously, there are still waters that need to be protected, but at least on the more well know waters, like Matt Warner, scofield, the Logan river, and the weeb there is no real reason to keep things under wraps. If you've been here long enough, you know about those waters anyway. There aren't any secrets. If it isn't the Provo or the weeb, Most folks won't bother to fish them anyway.

So what this site needs is more trip reports (with details and associated fish porn), more stoke, more sharing of new flies/patterns/info, and the realization that sometimes guys talk smack just to have fun with their buddies. If we didn't luv ya, we wouldn't pick on ya!

As far a moderation, I think this site needs more, and less at the same time. I've been on heavily moderated sites and quiet frankly they suck. That's not what this site needs. I have also been on sites where the "real" moderators were very light handed but the members of the board were very quick to call someone out for BS. I know alot of you don't like Chris, but he has the finest BS detector on this site. Sometimes the delivery is less than gentle, but that's just his style. Don't take it personal. Now I'm not suggesting that we all scream and yell at each other, but the occasional call out is OK in my book. Most of the time when folks get called out they are like, "Yup, you guys are right, I'm a dork..." In our case we need a non offensive word to describe it. Something like DINK! Imagine when we see the 800th "What rod should I buy thread" we can just respond "Search function, DINK!" How fun! (Usually followed by legit responses.) :D

Anyway, these are just my ideas, and they might suck. And while this isn't my site to run, I've been on sites where that the norm and there is a much bigger sense of community on those sites and that's a good thing. It's worth a think....

How about "jong"..... ;)

No hotspotting!!!! Provo's. Weber, Skullfield, Berry fine. Have some set guidelines but there are some places that you just take to your grave.

WTF…. What gives? Perhaps everyone should call in sick tomorrow and go fish, geez. I like this place and while it have had its up's and down's its pretty cool. There are many of you that I have met and more that I would like to fish with. All in all it's humorous as hell half the time and as Lonnie said if you could wade through it there is some really good info. I enjoy the stories and photos and have always wished there was more, without the sizing arguments and hotspotting. I have met a ton of great folks here and have tried to give back to others more than I receive. Although I don't spend that much time on here I would be saddened to see it go to bickering waste that some are suggesting. Most of the friendly ribbing is taken the wrong way I suppose but let's get back to the fishing. After all that's the common interest we all share… because its FUN. .

Chanceb - Try using the "ignore" function.... gets rid of some of the junk on here.
Improv - Have always admired your skills and hope to make it out with you one day. Perhaps the "moon Phase" is stirring the pot on this site a bit, who knows ; )
Wildnative - Man, you can't be serious… Abandoning your "web" home? Some people will never get along and as I'm sure you know, that's life. Keep being a helping hand because that's who you are, right?
Grizz - Where is my reading material, write faster!
Lonnie - Hope you make it to 5000
Bugeye - Where is the Fish Porn?
Chris - I am back from my trips, lets hit some water!

I'd tend to agree with you on this one Lonnie. Hotspotting should open up more but not so much as to include the quiet waters that can't stand the heat. I think in general people should post more trip reports, photos and the like. I think one reason they don't is cuz of all the crap they get when they do it.

I guess I'm also a little confused by your post on the MW trip and this one. So you want people to hotspot and post reports, but then bag on them for how they do it? My whole intent with posting fishing trips is not to show how great I am (cuz I'm not), but rather to give people more to read than "what rod should I buy". I know your post wasn't meant to be offensive, but I guess it was the principle of it -- especially considering your post here. Just sayin'... (Either way, I know you're a classy guy and I count you a friend)

I laud the notion of improving things around here and I encourage people to post fishing reports. I'll chat with the jefes, but maybe it's something we can change...

My opinion on hotspotting is to keep the current format. If you want a report, there are other sites you can check out (or drop some emails, PM's or post a report request). Keep the unique flavor of UTOF.

However, I would like to see more trip reports in a generic sense...drop no names, try not to post identifying photos, etc. Talk about the experience of the day or a memorable moment or how bad a chili omelet smells 4 hours after consumption, and not 'I fished the ___river at___hole during a blowfly hatch and caught fish at a rate of 13.7 per hour. If you want good fishing, get yer butt to the ____river at ____hole".

If you post a generic report, be prepared to receive PM or email for info and be willing to share info behind the scenes.

Here, here for the generic posts and fish porn! That's really what most of us want to be distracted by during otherwise boring, busy days.

I think Schmohawk would be a good word (any CYE fans? I discovered this last week, my second most favorite discovery)

And Lonnie, you are only trying to hit 5000, so its rather difficult to take anything you say seriously.

Keep with the same forum if people want things to change around here let them speak up. I dont think hotspotting is the answer sorry Lonnie JMO here. Its member involvement that we need. Sure post your report and pictures but name no names there is a gestalt information program here and if some members want the info there is places to get it.

I fished Oak Creek last Saturday. Fishing was pretty good for the most part. We could catch all the 13" brook trout we wanted. They were in pretty good shape, and fought pretty well. We only got one good brook trout (18"), but nothing bigger :(

There were more people up there on Saturday than I expected. 7 vehicles were down at the parking area, and 1 truck actually drove in to the lake. Everyone else took ATV's in. 15 people total fishing. But, I can't blame them. Fishing was pretty good!
