The sky was crystal blue, no clouds, 65 degrees. The air was still, clean and smelled of fall. The scrub oaks were shades of russet.

There were riffles leading into a deep, deep pool. The water was clear at least 6 feet down. A shelf and fast water were on one side and it was pretty sheer on the other. Four of us were fishing together over about a 120 yard stretch.

We fished PMD emergers with a provo-bounce rig all morning and extended body yellow PMD dry flies from 2pm on. The fishing was glorious. All of the fish were over 12", almost half were over 15" and three were over 17" - the longest 18+". The browns were thick in girth with good color and fought hard to stay wet. Everyone caught into the double digits and then a lot more. It was stunning to see dozens of fish rolling through the surface as they sucked in the PMD on the surface.

It was a brilliant day and one of my best day fishing on the ... ever.
Wish I had brought my camera to share the joy.

"The sea was angry that day my friends, like an old man trying to

return soup at a deli.......

I got about fifty-feet out and then suddenly the great beast

appeared before me. I tell ya he was ten stories high if he was a

foot. As if sensing my presence he gave out a big bellow. I said,

"Easy big fella!" And then as I watched him struggling I realized

something was obstructing his breathing. From where I was standing

I could see directly into the eye of the great fish!....."

Then says I, "Captain Ahab, you might take him on a nymph, but he'll never rise to a dry."

The wake that monster made, as he broke the surface, shot our boat farther out to sea at speeds unknown.

That's what made Ahab such a great captain.

styan not fare, I have to deal with life sober. What I would give to be sitting on the Black Water in Ireland sipping on a pint but no I am stuck in Utah reading about the Provo. Oh well I guess I can dream about steelheading.

"Mammal"....

"Whatever.

Well, what did you do next?

Then from out of nowhere a huge title wave lifted, tossed like a

quark and I found myself on top of him face to face with the

blow-hole. I could barely see from all of the waves crashing down on

top of me but I knew something was there so I reached my hand and

pulled out the obstruction......"

Mike, I sincerely wish you were here slaying them on the lower Strawberry River. If you'll share the location of your honey hole I promise to take very good care of it until you can get back into it :-)) Seriously, thanks for your service.
