This stuff is CRAP!!!!!! I have 2 of them. I bought 2 for my 4 wt. Same line. The first one broke on me and the second one cast like crap. I can literally grab a hold of this stuff and pull it apart. It floats OK but cast like crap. It has semi good presentation but not within the first 20 feet. The first 20 feet won't even cast. Once you get some line out it then is castable but trying to do a nice close cast is next to impossible. Has anyone had any other bad experiences with this stuff. I just wish I hadn't wasted my money on it. SA, Airflo (Especially the ridge line), and Rio all the way.
The worst part is it has my name in it.

The worst part is it has my name in it.I've bought it, and it has no durability whatsoever. It only lasted one season. You can though send the one that broke back to Cortland and they'll give you a new spool of crap 555.

There are two parts to your comments and I have one question about it. So, I haven't had any of this stuff because I haven't had good luck with most Cortland products.
But, the cast like crap makes me wonder what kind of line it is. Is it a WF or DT? If it's a WF, the first 20 ft makes sense. Different lines for different sitiations you know...
But, I'll avoid it nonetheless.

It is a weight forward but I just went out back and cast it and it doesn't cast till 36 feet (measured) That doesn't make sense for a 4wt line.

Did they put it on backwards? You think I'm kidding, but I have that very line put on my real backwards – I’m guessing it was spooled wrong from the manufacture, but I guess it’s possible that the boys at Sportsmen’s were a bit confused as to which end of the line they should reel in first.

I spooled it on and I am almost positive it is on the right direction. When I was first learning I flipped my line around because I was told you can get more life out of it. It ended up being a Wt Forward:)

Also, just so people aren't confused. The 555 series line is different from the traditional "Lazer" Cortland lines. The Lazer lines are pretty good in my experience.

I had a Rio Grand line come from the factory with the welded loop on the wrong end. I proceeded to fish with it a couple times, hating every minute of it. Once I realized the problem, it shoots like a cannon. Something to watch out for.

Apples are apples and oranges are oranges. I have used Cortland products for years and have been pleased. But I tried the 555 line and was very dissapointed in it's durability. I went back to 444 and have been pleased with it's performance and much better durability.
