This is for you Tiguy. Lets all talk about guides that we want to warn people about. Who was it, how long, and why did the guide suck. If this gets deleted I understand I am just thinking that it would be a good idea to warn people about bad guiding services before they hire a guide they will regret.

I think a better idea would be to list the good ones

Provo/Weber - Trevor Howard rocks, with out question the best guide on the river. This kid doesn’t need no stinking balloons to get you on fish and makes a great lunch. If you want a great guide experience get with Trevor quick, he just got hitched and his fishing days are numbered.

His dad is pretty good also, just getting a little old.

you know my only complaint with this thread is that there is a guide for every person, if you are going to make a fuss about bad guides make it pertinent to his work ethic and knowledge if you attack a guide just because the personalities don't mesh well it could hurt the business of a hard working guide who might have even just had an off day.

I had a guide yell at me when I missed a fish. I think he thought it was his fish or something.

He said something like "sheet, damnit, a-hole". Not sure the exact words now. but he was a big bullie. Like some of the guys here.

Somebody get me a wamburger and frech cries.

back to my initial saying.
there is a guide for every client while the guy swearing at you may not work for you that doesn't mean that there aren't clients out there who appreciate that intensity and actually feed off of it.

Frozen guides. That can make a trip miserable. Is it time yet to inquire about the best way to keep ice of your guides?

i am sure that i have pissed someone off it is human nature that you will meet people you don't get along with, and if he were to post he would have nothing but negatives to say but what might not get said is the great things that over a hundred of my clients have to say. and when you spend 8 hours in a 35 sq foot space with someone who from the get-go is a nuisance even a calm person can lash out and piss someone off

I don't think you have chosen the right career path.

Just a hunch.

I guide on the green and i may have left out a detail i can count on one hand the clients i have had in my boat that i would not gladly have back again. but they are there, and that is a fact of life. the most friendly person on earth will still have people who they do not get along with, and as far as career paths go, it is perfect i love my job

Easy there Utahflyguy! Lets not threaten the positive vibe we got going here:)

Spartagain, we are open 24-7 to stories and insights from your many adventures. Throw in some pictures, that's even better.

Ha! I don't know... Maybe Spartagain is? How do we know he is the real Spartagain?

Weren't the Romans the ones who first fished a fly? That's what I'll ask the guide to see if they're legit.

you know dustin is a great guy and a fair guide but as far as guiding the green his operation has one major flaw, they are both part timers, meaning that they quite possibly haven't worked the river in a month or so and the way the river fishes changes regularly making it just harder to provide an exerience in keeping with the way the river is fishing at that moment. their services are good about the same as any other guide for trout creek ( the outfit whose permit they guide under) but the knowledge is sometimes secondhand as far as the techniques and water to focus on at that time. I personally believe that fishwests forte is still the provo and weber rivers that they are more attuned to.

You mean there are other ways to fish the green besides a dry/dropper or thingamabobber?

Spartagain
10-31-2007, 10:39 PM
yes and how many days a year do you put on the green obviously not enough to know that it does change, oh and the thingamabobber really didn't start getting used very much until say august.

I've spent a couple days on the Provo and the Weber with Trevor and he is the real deal. Congrats on getting married!

Where are you from again?
Let me just say that you are going to have a good time around here that is unless you became able to recognize the code.

So spartagain, just so I'm reading this right, are you saying that one must adapt to the current fishing conditions at any given time?

That there is a novel idea, I've never thought of that. Man-O-Man, I'll bet I've been missing out on some good bumper boat fishing over on the Green. What a shame.

Thanks for the 411..........fisherman adapting to the current conditions.......... who'd a thought? No wonder guides are so smart.

peace

On a side note spartagain......there's button's on the left & right hand side of your keyboard that read "S-h-i-f-t"....... they help out in those crucial caps moments (like at the beginning of a sentence) & make reading a whole lot easier. I know, I know, you're too busy figuring out what those finicky Green River Trout are going to eat next to worry about punctuation. Next week we'll work on period placement.

Shit grizz, I just fish with a parachute adams with a bead head dropper everywhere I go, who cares about entomology anyway... its overrated;) I have to let the guides tell me what flies to use cause... well I have a limited background in flyfishing, almost 4 decades doesn't appear to be enough for these young guns. But I know how to use those pink balloon indicators now!!!

And here I thought all you had to do was stop in at the lodge and buy an assortment of the "latest," "hot" flies and just keep switching them around until one of them worked?

You mean to tell me that they don't sell the hottest thing on the river at the pro shops around Dutch John? :-)

Here's a plug for a guide who made a day on the Lower Provo very enjoyable for my wife and I yesterday. Doug Askelson, out of Fish Tech was a very patient, professional, knowlegable and entertaining guide. He made my wife feel at home on the river, taught her some very productive and easily mastered techniques. He made it so she enjoyed the afternoon, caught fish, and didn't have her husband nagging on her about mending the line. Kudos to Doug, balloon, corky, yarn or whatever. Its all about the client having fun and he accomplished that! I'd reccomend him to anyone who isn't too stinky about indicators...

Dustin is the one who taught me how to flyfish when we were both in college and took an english class together. I know him to be an ethical and very tallented fly fisherman although I have never hired him as a guide we have fished as friends many times, unfortunately not recently as life happens friends tend to drift apart.

Sparta. I have been reading through this thread, and I have one question. Who do you guide for? It seems like it is the one and only place to get a quality trip. Bad mojo and karma to bad mouth another guide or service on a public forum.

You see Charlie much on the river? If so, you should copy his every move.
