Its kind of surprising at how many wild turkeys there are in Utah.

very nice. We got a fly-by on the Green a while back by a few Toms flying in to check out the babes on our side of the river.

Really... they hatch from eggs Grant. Did you go to school in Vernal too? Or was it Escalante?

On that note, I saw a bunch the other day on the Mid-Pro.

I believe the Rio Grandes were native to Utah. However, quite a few Merriams have been brought into the state to augment the Rio Grand numbers over the years.

Used to call a lot of birds back in PA. Fun stuff. Tough hunting but lots of fun.

There was quite a flock this weekend on the LP they goobled in answer to the thunder. I have never heard them do that before. Mike D did you harvest one with your bow? Hard enough with a shotgun.

turkeys show up in archeological records, but when the pioneers showed up they were not around. No one knows when or who they disappeared.

Merriams were the first turkeys restored into Utah in the Boulder Mountains. they are a species that prefers open ponderosa Pine forests. They are most likely the historic subspecies in Utah becuase they are the native species in Colorado and New Mexico.

The dWR started an agressive Rio Grande transplant program back in the late 1980's and early 1990's for Rio grandes. The orignally got turkeys from anywhere they could like Kansas, Nebraska, SD and other states. The flock is now big enough to where the dwr can get the turkeys from Utah. The DWR thinks that they could eventually have a population of around 200,000 - 300,000 turkeys.

I have failed three times in my bid for a turkey permit.

I had a hen and three poults walk within about 20' of me on the middle three weeks ago. It was really, really cool.

Here is a link to some Turkey information.

While bow hunting in NM I slammed the car door after getting my gear on and 3 Jakes and a huge tom came running strait towards us. Talk about an easy shot.
I am amazed at how some turkeys are so stupid and others are the smartest things alive.
