A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT!
If you are looking for a new speed boat I guess it is worth your evening time, $13.00 addmision and gas money.

If you are interested in fly fishing or just fishing it is a TOTAL waste of the above. No fly rod, reel, line, manufacturers, no fly tying equipment, materials mfgs. No local sports/tackle shops. I don't think you could even buy a #12 dry Mustad hook.

You can buy fudge at $14.00/lb., pots and pans, AtV's, super duper absorbent cloth, or book a trip to a Canadian fishing camp.

Worst of all I only saw only one good looking babe and she had a guy on either side of her! That sucks!

Save your time and money.

Thanks for the report.

I am mostly interested in the flyfishing aspect of any show and it sounds like there is very little there. The only thing that could have saved it was the babes and you busted that bubble too.

So, the boat show is not the place to hunt babes, huh Ouzel. lol. What a suprise!

Just kidding. Thanks for the info. I was thinking about going, but I've reconsidered. I think I'll save my money for more important things--like beer.

Thanks!

I had a different experience. Yeah, there were alot of boats, skiing and boarding stuff (this is a boat show), and they do cover other types of fishing (my two 3 year old boys did enjoy catching small rainbows in the fishing pond with bait), and the nod to ff is only one small theater, but I enjoyed the show I saw, and I will be back when Larry Tullis shows up Saturday.

Dennis Brakke tied several patterns this afternoon. I liked his "Mike's Midge" and the "Chrome-midge" patterns. I also learned a way to strengthen my hurl wraps. The rest of you probably already knew the trick, but I didn't. He also had an interesting minnow streamer pattern.

They will have ff casting and fishing shows Fri. Sat and Sun.

I always enjoy the International Sportsman Show. Is it coming to SLC this year. I hear rumor that they have changed the way they run the show and a lot of the outfitters are pulling out. Anyone heard anything different? It usually happens in March?

The schedule on the boat show looked like they relied on mostly local talent from local fly shops which can be good.

Ouzel, If you want to see babes, buy one of those BIG expensive boats and take it to Powell. They'll be all over you dude! Be sure to take Doug Miller along too. Large boat...large speedo. :)

Raw....Speedo...I can't even imagine.......

For those of you interested in fly fishing, the show coming in March is the one to go to. The Intermountain Sport and Travel show???? I think that's what its called will be the one where manufacturer's will be displaying all of their laters wares....

Ouzel, if you wanted babes, you should have volunteered to help out at the kid's fishing pond....plenty of scenery there!!!!

I have heard it said that the vendors were asked to sign a contract stating to the effect that if they signed for one show they couldn't appear in the other. Don't know if it's true or not but that may explain a lot of things.

I went to the January show a few years ago at the Salt Palace and remember seeing rows and rows of B.C. and Alaska fishing vendors all saying they had "exclusive" rights to where ever and thinking with all the booths saying the same thing someone is full of BS.

I haven't went back to that show since but the Doug Miller show ain't much different.

I've talked with two fly shop owners since posting and they feel their attendance in a show at this time is a waste of effort and money. They both said it would be best to put a show on in April as many of the fishing manufacturers come out with their latest and greatest. And although winter is the best time to tie flies there seems to be little coordination amoung fly tying firms in bring out new products. Like doing taxes most people put off tying until the last moment and then chain themselves to their desks.
For economics sake I think combining a boat show and a fishing (fly) show makes sense but I wonder if the people who own the arenas are not the ones who are really driving the show time. They of course want to sell their square footage and winter time may be a slow for them so they start campaigning by announcing they are putting on a show and contacting everyone in the area.
I wonder if the arena owners ever polled the boat/fishing people to ask when might be the best time to hold a show? And was it done recently?
