New Fish Challenge - 2008
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've got a new challenge that could be a tough one. Here's the deal. During the year you must catch as many fish species as you can using the same fly pattern. This doesn't mean the same individual fly, just the exact same fly pattern; tied with the same materials, color, and in the same proportions. There's three scales to the challenge.
1. 5 species of fish using the same fly pattern.
2. 10 species of fish using the same fly pattern.
3. 15 species of fish using the same fly pattern.
****all during 2005.
The idea is to select a pattern and fish with it as much as possible for as many fish species as possible. At the end of the year it will be pretty interesting to see the results. Who knows, it may shed some light on the eternal debate of what the best "universal" fly pattern is.
There's a bonus. Try and catch 5 or more species using the same exact fly...kind of like the One Fly touney. If you lose the fly or it falls apart, it's over.
Here's a few patterns that could be the ideal fly pattern.
- black woolley bugger
- pheasant tail nymph
- clouser minnow
- parachute adams
- zonker
- CBS leech
- hares ear nymph
- midge pupa
- chernobyl ant

There is no way you will get Cheech to fish one fly all year long. Not even one day!

So what if you can catch 5 or 10, if it is a good fly, all on the same fly? Is there a bonus, such as braggin rights above all others that complete the task?

Dunno. Ask Jason. Like I said at the bottom of my post, I got tired of reading about the 2005 challenge and reposted it to 2008. I just wanted to see it changed.
How about all fish on a 32 Bunny Midge? And no cheating

Do different species of trout count? If so, I'm up to five on the same fly already. I found the fly in the parking lot at "West Bank Anglers" near Jackson Hole. By the looks of it, it had been run over a couple of times so it was looking really buggy. I told my wife, "that's going to best the best fly for the rest of the trip". And guess what, I was right on. That same fly has produced hook ups on at least 20 fish in two states & 5 rivers. Snake River Cutt, Bonneville Cutt, Brown, Rainbow, and one nice Brookie. I'm pretty sure a whitefish tried to eat it on the Snake but it couldn't fit it in it's mouth. It's missing one leg & is chewed to shi#$! now, but it is still stuck to the visor in my Jeep just in case I happen upon some water that holds a fish or two. Why do we waste our time tying (or buying) all these beautiful complicated patterns, when it is almost always the ugly piece of crap that catches the most fish?

If you are going to fish that fly, you should make a new category. Who can catch the biggest fish on the smallest fly.

It's a good challenge. A couple years ago I tried to catch as many species with a clouser minnow....I think I got up to about 12-13 species in one year. This year I've been semi-trying to see how many species I can catch with the Sex Dungeon. So far it's been a rainbow, brown, smallmouth, carp, tiger muskie, and perch. I should have my cutt and brookie next weekend and hopefully a few other species in the fall.....like a lake trout, wiper, striper, large mouth, catfish and walleye.
Like the challenge. I'm close to level one. The question is, are we going to be pretentious and not count whitefish?

Mick, Doug's right.
Dental floss ranch and pygmy ponies.
I might be movin' to Montana soon
Just to raise me up a crop of Dental Floss
Raisin' it up
Waxen it down
In a little white box
I can sell uptown
By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss,
But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Well I just might grow me some bees
But I'd leave the sweet stuff
For somebody else...
but then, on the other hand
I'd Keep the wax N' melt it down
Pluck some Floss N' swish it aroun'
I'd have me a crop
An' it'd be on top
that's why I'M movin' to Montana)
Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a Dental Floss tycoon
(yes I am)
Movin' to Montana soon
Gonna be a mennil-toss flykune
I'm pluckin' the ol' Dennil Floss
That's growin' on the prairie
Pluckin' the floss!
I plucked all day an' all nite an' all Afternoon...
I'm ridin' a small tiny hoss
(His name is MIGHTY LITTLE)
He's a good hoss
Even though He's a bit dinky to strap a big saddle or
Blanket on anyway
He's a bit dinky to strap a big saddle or
Blanket on anyway
Any way I'm pluckin' the ol' Dennil Floss
Even if you think it is a little silly, folks
I don't care if you think it's silly, folks
I don't care if you think it's silly, folks
I'm gonna find me a horse
Just about this big
An' ride him all along the border line
With a Pair of heavy-duty
Zircon-encrusted tweezers in my hand
Every other wrangler would say
I was mighty grand
By myself I wouldn't
Have no boss
But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss
Well I might Ride along the border
With my tweezers gleamin'
In the moon-lighty night
And then I'd Get a cuppa cawfee
N' give my foot a push...
Just me 'n the pymgy pony
Over the Dennil Floss Bush
N' then I might just Jumb back on
An' ride Like a cowboy
Into the dawn to Montana
Movin' to Montana soon
(Yippy-Ty-O-Ty-Ay)
Movin' to Montana soon

You have to list the San Juan Worm (red) in your list. Its a fantastic universal pattern. I can think of at least 10 species i caught on that pattern last year just fishing for trout.
Works on cold and warm water species.
Its a good challenge and i will take you up on this.

No problem. It's got to be a size 32 SJW though.
Anyone still plan on doing this?
I'll give it a whirl. I'm at 3 so far, but I haven't ventured too far off the beaten path yet.
Here's my question. Is a cutthroat a cutthroat? Or are we talking bear lake cutt, snake river cutt, colorado cutt, greenback cutt, etc, etc, etc as all different species?

...and how do you count hybrids, Tiger (trout & musky), Splake, Wiper, Cutt/Bow, and is an Albino trout a different species?... it is in the proclamation (I mean guidebook).

It's December! I thought I'd bump this to new to remind anyone who wants to try finish strong.
What was your cross-cultural pattern and how many species did it take?

I caught six species on a single pattern... drum roll... fuscia hareball leech. King, sockeye, chum, pink, rainbow, and dolly varden. I should try throwing it locally this fall.
I failed with the mouse pattern. I only caught 4 species, rainbow, grayling, brown, and cutthroat (bonneville).
LOL I totally forgot I was going to do this. Fishing got in the way... Seriously!
Byte what are you talking about bro? You failed at the mouse? Your kidding right? Only 4 species on a mouse? Thats it you suck :)

The rules state that I have to catch 5 species of fish to get to just the first tier... I only got 4. I suck.
I may have unknowingly played this game on the flats too. I think I caught bones, jack crevalle, needlefish, baby cudas, and maybe a mangrove snapper all on a crazy charlie, but I wasn't really paying attention so I can't testify to it.

Brook trout, rainbow trout, yellow perch, brown trout, largemouth bass and bluegill off of the Bobbing Baitfish. First tier isn't bad....
I should have gone for a few more....

Cutt, Brown, Splake, Tiger, Brooke all on the same fly on the same river in the same day. It used to be a common thing too do on this river but not anymore.

Depends on how you count:
Bow, Cutt, Brown, Brookie, Bluegill, very small LMB, Chub.
If they count serepately, also:
Tigertrout, Colorado Cutt, Bear Lake Cutt, Donaldson Steelhead.
All on a "Christmas for Kenny", a chironomid I made a while back.
Incidentally, I had a client catch all those same species minus Bluegill, Largemouth and Bear Lake Cutt in the same trip also on a "Christmas for Kenny".
