I got out yesterday and fished the opener of a small stream. I had a lot of fun bring in 6-8 inch cutthroat after cutthroat. I decided to move on to some stillwater fishing. I made my way up to a little lake where I managed to net a very fat and healthy 26-inch tiger trout. They have already begun to take on some of their fall colors, which just added to their spectacular beauty. I concluded the evening by tossing a few caddis patterns at some weary cutthroats on another small stream. I can't remember when I had such a get time fly-fishing. I was disappointed when I had to go home.
Today while unpacking I realized very quickly that I had lost, yet again, another fly box. My fishing euphoria immediately turned into the worse case of indigestion. This was one of those fly boxes that has pages to it, so I estimated that I had lost around 40-50 dozen flies. However, knowing that if this event should happen, I carefully (and with waterproof marker mind you) labeled the box and gave very specific instructions should someone stumble upon my box. Well… this story does in fact have a happy ending. Around 6 PM tonight, a very excited wife of the husband that found my box called with very specific instructions that she was to get a hold of the person whose name was on that box and let him know that it was found. The husband recognized the monetary and sentimental value of the box and told the wife over and over that this box MUST be returned to its owner. I immediately packed up the kids and drove to South Jordan. I was greeted at the door with box in hand. I offered a reward – to which they refused – I insisted – again they refused. So… my fellow brothers and sisters in fly-fishing, I’m turning to you for some help. I would obviously like to do something nice for my rescuer, but I’m not quit sure what would say thanks the way I want to say it. So, I’m looking to you all for some suggestions. The person who comes up with the most creative way to say thanks will win a dozen of my Royal soft hackle flies.
Happy fishing and thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Tie up a bunch of your favorites, put them in a small fly box and drop them off with a little thank you note. Not fancy but every FF would appreciate a couple dozen flies.

Didn't say whether or not the husband was a fly fisher although he certainly knows the value of your fly box.
Perhaps a gift certificate to a fine restaraunt would be a nice touch.

Larry is right. He found the box and she made the call to notify you the box was found. It should be something they could both enjoy and dinner might be it.

I like Fulano's idea, especially if they're some of your original or not in most stores type patterns.

I think Cary is on the right track, nothing says thank you like a night of high heart rate.
It fully depends on what you want to spend. I would say a half day guided trip. If he is a fly fisherman he will be stoked. If he is not hopefully he will be afterward, it is guys like that we need on the water. Make it for two so he can bring his wife.

He is a fly fisherman, so I really like the idea of tying him up some of my originals. However, I also like the idea of doing something for the wife too. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I give it until the end of the day and announce the winner or winners.
Thanks.

You should go and get a whole bunch of shredded paper and throw it all over their yard and burn thanks in the grass with some gasoline. oh wait you're not asking him to prom.
Take a gift basket over there with a gift card to cabelas for him and another one for Gastronomy (you know the market st. rest.) for her with some fruit. Its subtle but nice. when you think of the cost to value for those flies over this sort of thing its a very appropriate way to say you appreciate them and thanks.
Depending on how much you want to spend, I'd go with the flies and a dinner certificate of some sort. That way, the guy gets to get some flies back in return for giving you the box back. And they both get to enjoy a night out for their graces.

Tough like a man but made for a woman!
Take him fishing, If you've got a good place that you don't share with many people..... Get her a gift cert to the salon she calls home, or the day spa-nail salon. The gent was cool enough to give you back 40-50 DOZ flies, he’s cool enough to fish with….

Thanks again for all of your input. I think I’m going to go with the flies and dinner gift certificate. So… although they were suggested separately, I’m going to have to award TS30 for suggesting them together.
Thanks again – and happy fishing.
TS30 – please email me your address

Ben forget the flies and just give the gift certificate. If you had tied the flies that they found or if they were Ricks rejects you can see why they didn't want them.
best wishes

WOW, My faith in humanity has been restored you're very lucky. Many karma points to the fellow who returned it! What about contacting a local newspaper dude and pitch the story to him? With the recent article about the rude fisherman perhaps this could be a "yin" to the "yang"? Just a thought…

Mike…
I can’t believe you said that about Rick’s rejects. Sure… my flies are no treasure – but Rick’s rejects are priceless!
