They came in a group, oh, I'd say 4 or 5 at a time. One landed on my neck, one on my cheek, one on each leg. I almost dropped my fly rod as the penetrating sting registered in my brain. Swat, jump, head for deeper water, those little suckers hurt.
I have three bites all of them are developing a red rash and they itch like a bugger. I went on line and studied up and found out they can transmit anthrax and a few other nasties. Anybody have any ideas what to do?
Be sure to watch for them when wet wading!!

This is a very unscientific observation but it seems to me that there are more mosquitos in wet years and more horse flies and deer flies in dry years.

I was sucked dry by a swarm of them on Saturday. Still itching and swelling.

Al Gore is responsible for the increase in the # of deer flies and the increased pain that they cause. The only answer is to increase the levels of "Crotch Warming" by wearing full chest waders when fishing.

Get long pants that zip off. Cool morning no deer flys - shorts. Heat of noon and they come out - zip back on. Light wieght pants. Long sleeve fisherman shirt. Sleeves up in AM down in PM. Again light wieght with many vents. Buzz off shirt if can afford. 100% deet for hands face, neck. Cap for head. Flies seem not bothered by deet to much but less area to swat.

So deer flies are not like mosquitos in that their bite usually does not hurt? Is it as bad as a bee sting? Never been bit...yet.

It contributes to global warming...

I can't feel them biting, but they sure leave a mark. Right now I have about 10 bites from Saturday that still itch like mad. I heard they're not phased by deet, though. I'm going waders and long sleeves this weekend if I head out.

I also wear zip off pants but my hat, fanny pack and a piece of cloth that I tuck in on my back is sprayed with a permthrin (sp). I did get nailed once in Wyoming last week but that was it. My lab had blood running off her face before I tucked in a wash cloth with it on it in her collar and wiped a little on her coat and no problem after that.

Al Gore said this is what happens when Ultrathon washes off your legs and into the river....
