A 24 inch rainbow came flying past me in a shallow area of a stream (yes it is a private stream) with another fish chasing it hard. When it went by something was hanging out of its mouth, so I followed it to the pool. It had about a 2 foot water snake in its mouth. The snake was trying to bite the fish while it was underwater. I tried to get a picture but the fish was moving around to much. the snake ended up escaping but it was a cool struggle to watch. Makes me want to take some snake flies there and try them. I could add that to the list of mice and frogs.

If you have access you could take me I don't have snake flies but I could provide a 12er of bud light.

That is amazing. I would never have thought that they'd attack a snake.

I went fishing with a friend of a friend on a pond that sits on private property and he said some very large cutts inhabited the pond. One evening he was fishing it and he saw a big salamander swimming across the water and all of a sudden a big cutt came up and slashed at it and split it in half. Maybe another pattern to try at certain locations? I see a lot of snakes on the MP and LP so after hearing this story I would think the smaller ones would get gobbled every now and again. This got me thinking about all the things fish eat and I was wondering if they consistently eat spiders...do they? I know there are some flies called tarantulas...do they really imitate a spider? Has anyone caught a fish on a spider pattern of some sorts?

My grandfather taught me to fish on the LP 54 years ago and he had what he called a spider pattern. Tied with a big black or brown bulb like abdomine and long saddle hackle in brown or black. If I recall we caught a lot of fish on that fly. I don't even have any in my box. I think I will tie some up and try them.

I was once fishing a hole on a smaller stream that had a giant beehive on the river bank. For the most part, I didn't see too many fish rising for the bees. Then, one small cut came up and slurped a bee off the surface. About a second or two later, his head pops up out of the water and he spits the bee back out. I don't know if it stung the fish or what, but it was interesting. It seems odd that the fish would spit the bug back into the surface film.

I saw a water snake who had a hold of an 8 inch trout on the Ogden River. It had the trouts head in its mouth, and the trout was in a death coil. They booth rolled past me on the bottom of the river in a pretty deep hole. That was a pretty big water snake.
