I was up on the MP Tuesday evening. While I was walking back to the car alongside the river I saw what I thought was a large rock in the middle of some slower flatter water. It looked out of place and I was sort of starring at it and I thought I saw it move. It was fairly dark so I thought my eyes might have been playing tricks on me. Nope, after a few seconds I saw it move a little. It looked almost like a small bear's head just sticking out of the water. I freaked a little and quickly looked behind and around me to make sure its mom was not around if it actually was a bear. Then I saw it go under and I believe I saw a tail slowly flip up and dissappear. It was weird cuz this thing was facing upstream and just holding in the same spot for a long time, and it was big! Did I see the infamous large MP beaver?? If so, that dang thing is huge!

I was pretty sure it wasn't a bear since ive never heard of them near the MP before, but at night when you can't quite make out what something is a lot of stuff runs through your mind as to what it could be. I have never seen a massive beaver with its head out of the water just stationary in the middle of a deep hole, maybe it was shallower than I thought and he was on the bottom, who knows? I'll try and get a picture of it if I see the monster again. Nessy lives!

About 2 yrs ago there was a beaver of epic size that lived about a mile or so above the mailboxes on the middle. We called him "Hoss". He looked like you could put a saddle on him. When you fished well into dark you were always waiting for the deafening tailslap from Hoss. He usually snuck up silently and got pretty close before he did it too. Hoss was cool.
I haven't seen Hoss in a while and figured he had moved on to the great willow-hut in the sky. Maybe its him or one of his progeny.

Bears have been seen on the Lower Provo last year, in Kimball Junction this year and in American Fork. There is no reason why they couldn't be along the MP as well. The upper section is fairly devoid of development for now so there could be bears up there, especially at night when it is dark.

It doesn't relate a 100% but I was up in the high uinta's a few years back 12 to be exact and I was walking down the trail and was almost to some river when I stopped and I actually stopped everyone we were with and said look over there. There was a freaking head looking over a bush at us and it looked just like a bear from afar. In ended up being a choi or however you spell the dumb name. It looked just like it scared the crap out of us but we still wanted to get closer to take pics. Yeah dumb but I thought I was fast when I was a kid so I could just out run it, right......NOT!!!

X how can you be so sure, is it because you have never seen one. I have seen an otter two different times on the middle. The first time I was not sure because I thought I was seeing things. I thought it was a mink on steroids. There is no way a beaver could hold mid stream with its head up out of the water. They have no neck and most humans know what a beavers tail looks like. Shape of the head looked like a bear. If Fisnon would have said the head was shaped like a rat there would be no question. I am sticking with otter.

Saw a river otter at the Cottonwoods area below the dam just 10 days ago. I think Marty's right.

I took this pic at dusk about 2 weeks ago near the Cottonwood bridge. Guy let me get pretty close and the zoom did the rest.

It was late and dark...All I could see was the sillouete of a big head sticking out of the water mid river and it was stationary. For a second I thought it could be a bear cub...which is not too far fetched since around the same time I was up Hobble Creek one day and there was a bear just across river from me and I didn't even know it...No, I would never confuse a rodent with a bear if I was in daylight =)
