Interesting article in today's Trib on East Canyon Creek and some of the issues that it is faced with ie, population, pollution and water rights. Just curious, is there anyone out there that can give me a little history/background on this water? I have driven through the canyon and it seemed like a beautiful stretch of water but I have been told that is is primarily a private stretch of water????

In the same rag this am is the tuesday fishing report. For some reason reading that just rubs me the wrong way. For example, in my opin the cicada fishing has never been that good on the B section of the green: the canyon walls of the A section both hold more bugs and allow greater access to the dummies that fall in. so why did he write up today how good the cicada fishing is on the b section??
or am i the dummy?

It makes you wonder if he gets out that much, I agree that the A section is much better.

It is mostly private. In fact, I don't know if there is anywhere you can fish it. In high school a buddy and I used to sneak on it at night. We caught HUGE browns stripping streamers with our headlamps.

I think there is a little section around the Mormon Flats area that you can still access, I tried this a couple of years ago but caught nothing but small rainbows...

Is that above or below the reservoir? I have only fished below the dam.

It is South of East Canyon Res., not to far from the Jeremy Ranch golf course. Is access also a problem below the dam? I drove that road it the water sure looks nice but it seemed as if it was tighter access than fort knox.

The river below the dam is tight, lots of brush and trees. However, it is very fishable - but, you can't get on it because it is mostly private. In fact, I don't know anywhere you can fish below the dam. Like I said before, if you can get on the river, there are some huge browns and it is fishable.

Y'all,
From Mormon Flats you have access to about 1.5 miles of stream. The Park City chapter of Trout Unlimited is doing a stream restoration project on the Mormon Flat area, so please do not disturb any of the logs and rocks like the Boy Scouts are doing.
There are some browns, bows, and cutts. No like it used to be, but they are there.
I use to fish that creek all the time 10-15 years ago. It is a beautiful stream with tons of good sized browns and some cutts. It is hard to find access anymore. According to property owners, us gun weilding wacko fishermen are shooting up there homes, summer homes and no trespassing signs. We also walk through their fields and block their gates...not to mention all the trash we leave behind. A lucky few have written permission to fish some areas and if you're a member of some of the LDS Stakes that have camps up there (Woodland and Zarahemlah) you can fish those places with proper permission. Other than that, I just dream and drool about all those untouched trout.

I don't know about the section below the dam, but above the reservoir is a total waste of time. Don't bother. It's 95% private, and the small section near mormom flats is pretty much void of any fish. I checked it out last summer and hooked into a few 5 inch Cutts. The weed growth is also a big problem once the stream becomes a trickle. July would be the best time to fish it. But, the stream inlet into East Canyon Res could be a good place to try. I've seen some large rainbows taken out of that small stream section below the East Canyon resort.
Just to clarify my previous post, I was referring to the river below the dam. It really is a great stream with nice trout. It even has a good stonefly hatch and hoppers in the fall down in the meadow sections and you wouldn't believe some of the trout you can hook on a Prince and...well, dreams are for those who sleep. Goodnight!
A company called Gold Fleck owns quite a bit of the East Canyon Creek below the dam. You can call them up in Ogden and become a member. Once a member you can camp, hunt and fish on the their property. For about 3 years I was a member just for the creek access and fishing. However, after the 3rd year it was tough. There were so many people camping and fishing and keeping them the fishing became difficult. Many people were catching and eating their limits every day. When I first started there it was quiet and not so many people and fishing was great! Very nice browns. Cor

I am lucky to have access to this stream. My Uncle is one of the landowners. However, some of the landowners patrol it like it was Fort Knox. You practically have to carry a billboard to announce how you got access. My brother and I fished there a lot the summer of '99. Mostly 12-14" browns and an occassional 15-16" rainbow. The last couple of years the fishing has been slower. I think it gets fished pretty hard by the locals and worm chuckers. BTW, this stretch of river is closed November thru March.
