I seem to have a problem with my fly cement drying up on me before I can use it all up. Even with the cap on the jar on tight, it still seems to let air in and dries up. What do you do to prevent this from happening? I just threw away 5 jars of dried up cement. I am obviously doing something wrong. Please help.
Thanks

Don't throw away the little plastic cone shaped gasket under the cap or the cement will get thick and dry up on you. This gasket is a pain because it wants to fall out when you take the cap off. Its a conspiracy to sell more tiny bottles of glue.

What do you use the cement for? When I was taught to tie I was shown how to whip finish and that's it. I haven't ever used cement in my fly tying.

It's all in what you are used to doing. Some use it. Some don't. Some use it all the time, some use it some of the time. Some like to "bomb proof" their flies. Some use it when they screw up a whip finish or break their thread when they don't mean to. Some use it when attaching hackle to parachute posts, some use it to cover their thread wraps before wrapping peacock herl to form a body. Use it to cover thread before attaching foam bodies to keep them from twisting on the hook.
Some even apply it to the thread before they finish the head. It goes on and on.
I guess it's what you are taught.............. or not taught.

I rarely use head cement, i just do several whip finish knots and that seems to hold very good. I do the epoxy backs a lot but thats about it.

I have never found the answer to the drying up problem and I have tried almost ever type of applicator. Using a thinner helps. Sounds like you just need to tie more, so it’s used up before it dries. Using head cement is a great habit to have. Even with a good whip finishing the fly with head cement produces a longer lasting fly. I am one that skips head cement on flies smaller than an 10.

I used to never use the stuff, pretty much because I was to lazy to put it on. I use it on all my flies now. It has made a pretty big difference on the durability of a fly. I honestly don't know why you wouldn't want to put it on, even if you use a whip finish.
You are right though, I should tie more, but I would rather spend my time fishing than tying.
Thanks for the tip

Double whip finish 4 whips each. I cant recall ever having one come undone. I like superglue myself lil dab will do, i use it mainly on dry for hackle. On larger flys i will whip finish 3 or 4 timesback and forth over them selves finishing away from the eye

Go buy yourself a gallon of toluene and a tube of Shoe-Goo. Thin the Shoe-Goo with the Toluene to the desired consistency. I've been using the same gallon for about 12 years now. I'm on my second tube of Shoe-Goo. I put a piece of cellophane over the mouth of the jar when it will be idle for awhile. When it thickens up, just thin it out again.

I was tieing with Dave's tieing cement. Sitting up in my bed with my tieing table pushed up against it. It was coming close to two in the morning and I fell asleep while tieing. I woke up about 5 minutes later and had a nice little buzz going on. My tieing cement had been on my desk about 2 inches below my nose when I fell asleep. Well after dropping a bunch of hooks and laughing at how poor my motor skills were for the next hour I finally fell asleep. Next morning I woke up and threw out 15 flies because of how brightly colored and crappy looking they were. :):):):):):):):):):)

I got tired of that as well. Now I use poor man's cement - nail polish. Not as tough maybe but does the job protecting the whip finish I guess.
