the Vosseler DC-2 reel is an good looking rod with a super smooth drag, beautiful sound to it as a fish rips line, and really easy to work with. The only problem I have with it is that with the large arbor, there is not much room for backing. To solve this I have cut off the last bit of my weight forward line. Not a huge deal but I would definitely rather not have to do this. If anyone out there has the solution let me know. My first expensive reel, and it is definitely a treat for me.

Colby, what line weight did you put on the reel?

And if you have to cut any line off the fly line do it from the running line part of the line, not the tip. If you cut it off the tip, you'll never get a decent presentation.

I had the same problem. Tried to throw a DT 6wt Rio ST on without any backing at all, no go, the line alone would not fit on the reel. I ended up putting a 15ft 400grain density compensated sink tip on it. It fit on there with minimal backing. I'd imagine you could get select shooting tapers or forward tapers on with minimal backing, but I haven't researched it yet. Nice reel, but I only get to use it when I go steep & deep.

Colby, your DC2 is rated for 3/4 weight lines. With a standard 90 foot WF line you should be able to get 32 yards of 20lb dacron on it. The DC3 (Grizz) is rated for 5/6 lines and 55 yards of 20lb dacron when using WF lines. DT lines, due to having a larger diameter over more of the line, will allow for less backing. Either of those should be enough backing for trout use ('cept for Grizz, who routinely sticks hot pigs). If you need more backing capacity you can get a standard arbor spool that increases the line capacity by two sizes.
I have been able to put the suggested backing quantity on all the reels, using WF lines from Airflo, Cortland, SA and Rio without chopping lines (haven't used a DT for years).

I think it was a 4 wt...check the box. It was probably an Airflo Rige Line Presentation WF4.
If your problem is just getting a useful amount of backing on the reel with your line, you might try using one of the braided fishing lines (fireline, spiderwire, etc) instead of dacron. Its just as strong, but much much thinner. Just remember not to store your reel in a hot place during the summer. High heat and firewire don't get along so good.
Used to work for me on my old reel.
