Howdy everybody, just barely got on here after a couple weeks of not having time to get on. But I'm up in Olympia WA working for the summer and supposedly next to some prime salmon and steelhead rivers. Unfortunately I have only a 3 and 5 weight with me but have been eyeing a nice 8 weight....Mmmmm 8 weight..... However, I've never fished for the species. Anybody got any tips or general guidelines for the techniques?

You are going to love it up there. The summer steel head run isn't as big as the the winter runs, but you you will get a super charge out of them. Once you have taken one, you will not want to fish anything else. They are that good. I agree with the others though. You can get with someone at one of the fly shops up there and pick there brains. You will want several flies that are tied with good quality hooks, and that means steel head salmon hooks. Go to www.flyfishingforum.com and talk to some of the pros on there. It is just like this forum but mostly for steel head and salmon fishing. Talk to Fred or Ryan (sparky) I think his handle is. He lives in Washington and has a fly shop. He will be more then glad to help you! Flies like the boss, or black double bunny leach. big flies.... Smallest will be a number 4 boss or purple peril. You are in for a treat! If you have any questions, just drop a line!
