I was wondering if anyone has read any books or taken any good classes on entomology. I would love to learn more about the cycles bugs go through and Identifying the types of bugs in a rivers ecosystem. I believe this will help me immensley in my outings to cut down on the guess work of whats working. Any help would be greatly appreciated. THANKS!

Hopper,
Take advantage of the Fall class that will be held this year. Here is some info on the SPring class that just passed. I have had the pleasure to help both Rick and Trav teach the class. Bar none its the best class held in the state! You will learn about ALL the major insect cycles and hatches of Utah and many other famous waters.
If you are interested contact Rick for the fall class because it tends to fill up quick!
Fly Fishing Class
Spring Fly Fishing Class
If you’re interested, here’s the schedule for the spring fly-fishing class.
Currently there are two classes scheduled starting on the following dates, Tuesday March 23rd, and Thursday March 25th. I’ve scheduled two classes at present with the idea of being able to accommodate everyone interested.
Classes are taught through the Jordan School District Community Education Program, on behalf of the Stonefly Society. They are held at Butler Middle School:
2700 East 7000 South
Salt Lake City, UT. 84121
Each class will run for seven weeks, one night a week from 7:00-10:00pm.
Cost of the class is $45/ person payable to Jordan District and $13 material fee payable to Instructor, which is an incredible opportunity.
Subject detail includes coverage of: Rods, Reels, Lines, Knots, Terminal Tackle, Entomology~> Caddis, Mayflies, Stoneflies, Midge, Terrestrials, Still Water Insects, Reading Water, Techniques: Nymph fishing, Dry fly, Terrestrial fishing, Streamer, and Still Water fishing, Handling fish, Photography, Ethics, and Trout Anatomy.
I schedule a half-day field trip on a Saturday, usually as the class is winding down.
Presentation being one of the most critical components is stressed and taught in detail, beginning with the basics, moving through to the specialty casts as the student progresses. We cast in the gymnasium, unless the weather permits leaving us an opportunity to cast outside on the grass.
This class suits well both the novice, just getting into the sport, as well as the individual that’s been fly-fishing for years. There is no shortage of information in the format each night.
I’ve met some great people over the last nineteen years. This class offers a wonderful opportunity to spend some time with a group of individuals who share the same interest and passion, asking questions, sharing ideas and thoughts and learning about fly fishing.
If you have any questions feel free to email me at rickl.peterson@netzero.net.

Hopper, just shoot Rick an email from the post above. Also, I look forward to seeing you. I had a great time this last go around meeting class members and spending time with them. Rick is a great instructor and mentor and I have learned so much from him over the years.

if you're already up to speed on rods, reels, knots and fishing basics, I think Western River's does an entomology class that includes a 1/2 day on the provo river identifying insects in the field. Check their web site.
Hopper-Dropper,
The class is a lot of fun and certainly worth taking. We typically run Fall, Winter and Spring with the Winter and Spring classes filling quickly. If you want some additional information on it contact me or Rick. Here is his updated email address, rpeterson7725@msn.com. Rick covers a ton of information and we spend 6 total hours going over casting which is always a great time.
The Western class is also a good idea, I have taken it and enjoyed the presentation from Steve. I believe it runs around $50 for one night at the shop and a few hours on the water the next day. When I took it we happened to find a lot of big salmonfiles and I bottled a few up. Anyway, If the class is going on I highly recomend it.

is the one through jordan school district more heavily weighted towards the entomology or the all-around introduction to fly fishing?

Hopper, it is geared more towards entomology. Each night a different cycle will be covered.
