I have a couple of questions about registering a pontoon:

1) I understand that, if you have a pontoon and put a motor on it, you need to get it registered: which involves paying a fee and property tax. From what I understand, all this is done at the DMV and you do not need to provide them with any sort of evidence of the value on the boat, but simply to give them a description and a best-guess of the value. Is this correct?

2) I understand that non-residents must also register their boats when on Utah waters. Is this true when the Utah resident takes their pontoon w/ electric motor up to WY or ID? Do you have to get it registered?

Fred, when Joni went to register our kickboats last month, she had to come back to the house to get the recipt with what they
cost. Then when she went back to the DMV they asked why there was no title???????? (it ends up on the registration as a non-titled watercraft)
She politely described and showed them a picture of the boats, and the gal was mystified still. Call the supervisor and straighten it all out. It's still new to most of them. You pay property tax based on what it cost and then you pay the regular licensing fee.
Ours cost $22.00 each because of the original cost.
BTW, they will ask you for serial or VIN #'s. If your kickboat doesn't have them, they will assign you a VIN.
You have to exhibit your bow numbers and tag.
Get plexiglass- 2 pcs. about 4" X 24" and some stick on letters and #'s. Put your registration #'s and yearly tag on.
Drill some holes in the top and fasten them on with those metal shower curtin clips. Easily removeable.

Question # 2- your kickboat with a motor is no different then a small boat w/ motor, or any other boat. As long as it's registered and licensed in your home state, you're fine on other state waters. Being under 12' all you need is a pfd.
