They are not blue wings. Big, black bodies. I only see a few but they have three tails not 2. Anybody know what they are? I thought maybe they were March browns.
where are they and what time have you seen them. March Browns typically frequent fast moving pocket water and emerge in the late afternoon

I saw them in the deep run above Hoovers Hole around 1:00. Thought it was a blue wing until I saw the real blue wings too.

Yeah, are you sure it was a mayfly? Mayflies have upright wings and look like little sailboats. Stones have longer wings that lay down relatively flat against their bodies.

I actually found a stonefly with an egg sack yesterday. Pretty cool to find. If I see another one of these bugs tomorrow I will get a picture. Maybe it was a large blue wing. It just didnt look like the other blue wings Ive been seeing. Like I say, it had three tails not just two.

It could have been a Mahogany Dun. They are brownish/blackish larger and have 3 tails. I have not seen many of them around but they tend to come off in April. PMDs have 3 tails but you can distinguish them by the color very easily.
You sure it wasnt a Big Ass Midge? :)
PS. The March Brown only has two tails.

You are exactly right!!!! It was probably the buffalo midge that's been coming off.

Tooleguy-
I believe JayMorr has given you the best information by suggesting Mahogany Dun, which would be Paraleptophlebia. My guess would be Dark Blue Quill (Paraleptophlebia heteronea), which has a dark slate colored body.

I think that you would be suprised how big some of the BWO get. That would be my guess.

Jason-
The BWOs in Utah are of family Baetidae, and all have only two tails in their winged stages. Only the eastern BWOs of family Ephemerellidae, generally Drunella lata and reclassified synonyms, have three tails in their winged stages.

When the discussion turns to "what have I got here", it's usually prudent to use the proper scientific names, rather than attempting to use common names for insects. And, this is never more true than when discussing BWOs, as "Bluewinged Olive" appears in the common name of all the following:
