Hey, has anyone thought about how to get to the Provo during the Olympics? I think it's going to be hard. Let's have a UTOF fishing day during the Olympics that would be cool. Cor

I'm going to the Green for a few days during the Olympics. I'm tying up my Yong's and Ice emergers (same idea as Mike's Gorge Burger midge) and will be having a blast midging. No sense staying around here fighting the traffic.

If anyone wants to meet up then, I'm up for it.

So, you'll be tying Yong's Special for a trip to the Green. I couldn't convince you last year, but now I suppose you've seen the light, or at least how-to in the magazine.

Just so you're aware, there's now an Improved Yong Special. ; ) Good luck, or rather good drifts -- because with a good drift and a Yong Special you won't need luck.

I guess I saw the light (Shawn?). I was never against using them, just didn't/don't use them exclusively. I've always thought they worked well for midge patterns, along with a lot of other patterns. I've just started tying the "real thing" lately (well at least from what Rick wrote about in FF Mag) and I kind of like tying them that way. So I'll give credit where credit is due. Andy ties up a great pattern. I'll be the first to admit my Yong "wanna be's" weren't as attractive to me as Andy's style that I use now. So yes, my midge box now consists of a lot (and growing every day) of Yong's specials tied using Andy's method. Of course I still have my old stand-by's. My Ice emerger still outfishes the Yong in the emerger/pupa situation (surface film feeders), in my experience so far. So I like to mix it up a bit.

What are your favorite colors (beyond the summer brown)? I've been tying black, and gray with some bloods on the way. And what's the "improved Yong"? Sounds interesting.

You are correct in that a Yong with a good drift is a deadly combo. No luck needed. My friend Simon saw that firsthand watching Andy on the Green last June. Fish after fish after fish....
Plus Andy even stopped and gave him some pointers and talked to him, which was really cool. I guess he was as amazed as I was the first time seeing him fish.

Fishon!!!

This may not have a direct comparison to all points on the Provo, but you'll get the idea...

The Olympic Transportation Guide indicates the following for travel from Downtown SLC to Soldier Hollow.

Step 1: Select Transportation Travel Time: 2 hs 30 min.
Step 2: Add time for getting to your seat: 30 min.
Step 3: Add additional time to avoid traffic congestion and
delays: 1 hr.
Step 4: Calculate total travel time: 4 HOURS.

Oh, and by the way, avoid Eastbound I80 and 189 virtually every day of the Olympics from 5 am to 10 am and I suspect the traffic will be just about as bad coming home!

Curtis, if you can get past Park City, going to the Green might not be a half bad idea. Oh, and try the Yong Flasher for the emerger/surface feeders. It usually more effective than a Special in that situation.

I wonder how many out of towners are going to be hitting the Provo during the games. I think that if you know the provo well there should not be any problems getting a spot and having it to yourself. I for one am going to stick to the Lower in the city.
It will be intresting to see what its like.

OK I HAVE TO VENT:

I remember the moment that I it was publically announced that SLC won the olympic bid. I was in Albertsons in Orem, and remember cursing under my breath. Every host city has regretted hosting the Olympics; despite all the upbeat PR trash that SLOC is trying to blow up our... noses... with millions of their ad bucks.

I just wonder how much the per capita tax burden of this little two-week long period of sports fun, drinking and vistor deborchery all over town will be going on. I'll bet we're all paying enough taxes to buy a sage or two or even three. Gee... I bet my little daughter wishes I could buy her that bicycle she likes. Sorry kids I'm paying for a couple dozen rounds of beers for the Swedish underwater hockey team!!!

Oh, and I forgot the $500,000 our state is paying to wine, dine and hire hookers for out of town celebrities and dignitaries. The Olympics make me sick!!! Where's the money when our children's teachers want a meager raise on their terribly low salary???

Since the Summer Olympics held in L. A. when they made good profits every city thinks they can duplicate the situation plus get a lot of gov. money for roads and inferstucture.
But it was a 6 week summer event and not a 2 week winter event. L. A. also had a lot of things already in place and therefore did not have to spend as other cities had had to.
with a longer event duration more people could attand and more people travel in the summertime.
Often it is a way for the city fathers to push through associated bills (more spending & taxes) that the people would shoot down at other times.
When I first heard that SLC was to be a host I wanted to move. I knew thses bozos would screw things up and as we all know the scandles started right away.
$500,000.00 for hookers, parties etc. for out-of-town celebs???
In a state wholely run by the Mormon Church and with mostly Mormons on the Olympic Committes and in positions of importance??
My, My.

I don't think anyone can keep their comments unoffensive to you Curtis. Of course, any comment is going to offend someone, especially when religion comes into play. This is not a religious forum, but it is not an Olympic debate forum either, yet that is what we are all talking about.......

Nice, PBH did to you what you just did to Ouzel and for that you will ignore any further posts from him. Maybe all the rest of us that you have chastized can now ignore any further posts on your part. Ouzel, PBH and all the many others who have become victim to your "childish jabs"and continuous whining continue with your comments weather religous, olympic, ice fishing, bait fishing, ect. I for one enjoy them.

I think the best bet for fishing is the weber. Although traffic going to the ice kerling events at the ice sheet in ogden may draw a few big crowds up there. How big is ice kerling? We'll see...

I think the Weber is going to be really tough to get to. A lot of the ski events are being held at Snowbasin, which they are accessing via Trapper's Loop in Weber canyon. If you can make it past Trapper's Loop it may not be bad, but I hate the thought of traffic from the mouth of the canyon to there.

I'm still waiting for the picture of the Ice Emerger from last summer.

Maybe this would be a good time to check out the Ogden River. I for one have never been. Although you will probably run into crowds from the Olympics there as well. I guess I can always tie up some spring-time flies. How does the Ogden Fish.? It looks very low right now.

I am pondering the idea of flyfishing the river Jordan.

I am able to walk there if the traffic and security check points become to intense.

Cor, do you have a day, and place in mind during this joyous, celestial event?

I have read about his legendary fly, from the old posts. Mike if you read this, would you be willling to post your recipe?

Also I have heard of a wonderbread spinner. Anyone have a recipe on how to tye it?

I would like to land a Carp, I hear they are very elusive and will take your line out into the backing. Any one willing to share info on a good access point in the salt lake valley?

I will probably avoid it all by tying flies to rebuild my inventory boxes. There are also a couple of rivers I want to try this year and have done the research as to flies needed.
It is marginal time of the year anyway and I find fly tying offers the opportunity to bring back in my minds eye the reasons (some silly) I lost the flies in the first place.

I'm taking time off from work during the olympics cuz I won't be able to get to work! So, I'm fishing the gosh dern provo no matter what. So, the question is how the hell to get there...Probably only through Provo Canyon.... I'm going dudes...see ya up there! How 'bout a gold UTOF sticker for the biggest trout caught during the olympics.

Fishing, drinking, cigars, and catching up on the Olympics on the 10pm news. What a life. I think it's way cool that the Olympics are here. Cor

Larry,
I can't believe I forgot about that! Man, what a dunce I've been on that picture. I'm in New Hampshire this next week, but when I get back, I'll snap a picture and send it your way. Seriously, this fly is the bomb for midge emergers.
