According to these findings worms are a match-the-hatch pattern for the MP.

I have only recently begun tying worms. I have tried the SJ style and one that is just tan/pink thread on a bent hook. The latter picked up a few small fish for me last year. What is your preferred pattern to match the natural?

a number 2 or 4 hook, with the barb filed down wrapped in red lace.......oh man, sounds too sexy even for me!!!!

I use those sizes for the "Big Red". There's a photo on the site for it somewhere. I'm not sure where it is nowadays, but the pattern is a good one if you're into fishing SJW type stuff.

Sounds like a job for the Neon Nightmare....

To be honest, I have some sj's and I have tried to use them, but I have never caught a single fish on a worm pattern. I gave up on using them a couple years ago. Now I just use a flashback sowbug when conditions are ripe for a worm pattern and I sometimes catch a fish or 2. Last year during runnoff a #14 rainbow warrior worked fine for me. Worms suck except for the real ones.

I have to agree with S&P here. I've never done particularly well on any worm pattern of any size at any time. Maybe I'm missing the boat on this one, but there's got to be something that makes so many guys use them......

Next time I need to send you some flies, remind me to send you a worm that I like to use.

I use a twisted foam worm. When fish are hitting worms right on the surface, it's a great pattern! :)

I once saw a trout leap 2 feet into a willow tree to eat an inch worm.
BTW I have the Kabob nymphs done. I went to mail them this morning and the lazy Post Office is closed. Anyone else get Jan 2 off for a holiday? Didn't think so. ;)

Charlie Cravens pig sticker is an amazing worm pattern and easy to tie as well.

I never tried the hot pink but light brown or red have worked pretty well for me on the MP during the runoff... I have tried fishing some bigger patterns but the smaller ones I picked up at 4 Seasons are the only ones that have caught fish for me. The takes seem to always be pretty dang aggressive too....mmmm protien.

For the MP, size 14 or 12 scud style hook and about 1.5 inch of worm chennile. Can't keep the fish off either a light brown or pink. And for those fish that are smart enough to stay off the worm, drop a midge pupae or mayfly nymph behind it.

I was catching some on a #18 mustad all purpose 37160 with only tan thread and a small section of pink thread. The 18s of this model are more like a 14 or 12 of similar Tiemco models. Small for a worm but it worked well considering they didn't get a lot of playing time. And it wasn't runoff it was a couple months ago.

The fish could have been taking them for midge larva.

Makes sense.

This worm works better if you tie a daphnia on its back...you know like a lamprey on a shark.

If you fish stillwaters its hard to beat a San Juan Style worm and it doesnt have to be just red in color. I have a worm box with 20 different colors and 10 different sizes. I remember fishing a size 16 sjw style hook with black stretch tubing around it and just hammered fish at Crowley for four days straight. I like to fish them as a real thin leach pattern.
