I would like to expand on the Fly Line to Leader Connection thread FlyGuy started.

I have been using a clinch knot and improved clinch knot for tying the fly to the tippet for over 20 years. Does anyone use or recommend anything else?

Why?

I used the clinch knot for a few years after I started fly fishing and then I read this article on the Davy Knot: http://www.amazingoutdoors.com/0,2010,P1760-A7745-TA,00.html Now the majority of the time I use the Davy Knot. Once you learn how to tie it, it is very quick and strong. At least that is what I have found. Also, on those cold days when my fingers are numb, I find that it is easier to tie than the clinch knot because it takes less twisting of the fingers. I still use the clinch knot occationally....... sometimes I like to switch up just for the heck of it. I find that the Davy knot is especially nice on smaller flies because it is a smaller knot. Anyway, give it a try.

A guide in Mexico showed me a knot that gave more action to streamers. Thread the line through the eye and then pull the tag end about 6" long. Then using the two pieces of line simply tie an overhand knot. (Form a loop with the two pieces of line and then put the fly through it)

This gives a knot that does not slip and can be tightened up just in front of the eye. This lets the streamer hinge and have more "jigging" action. I have never tested it for strength but it seems to work well.

In the book Midge Magic, the author describes a knot (for tying to #24- 32 hooks) very similar to the Davy knot. I don't know how to describe it. I will try both knots and let you know.

Thats called a Palomar Knot, It's used a lot for tying bait hooks on in the Salt. Very easy to tie and strong as hell.

I used the clinch for years. I decorated several trees on the Logan and gave a few fish nice lip ornaments as well. A few years ago a friend showed me the Turtle Knot, sounds very similar to Palomar knot 1fly and HWG are talking about.

Thread the tippet through the eye, then back through. This will leave you with a loop on one side of the eye and the tippet and tag end on the other side. Tie an overhand knot and slip the flie through the loop end. Give it some spit and tighten by pulling the tippet/tag end.

It sounds complicated but is very simple and, like previous descriptions of the Palomar knot, very strong. It is rare for me to break this knot. Definately much stonger than the clinch IMHO.

I have used the "cinch", improved cinch, turle, and others but for the last 15 years I have used "The Spinning Knot" as described in Darrel Martin's book "Fly-Tying methods", pp259.
The beauty of this knot is: The smaller the fly the easier it is to tie- - - once the eye is threaded you can tie it in the dark- - - you can tighten it so it will hinge a fly or hold it solid - - - it will retain 95% + of the line test - - - it is easy to tie. I like that!

I have used the improved clinch knot for years but this past few years I have experience numerous failures (I'm the tippett, not me!!!!". This past summer I switch to the Pitzen or Orvis knot This knot gives a lot more action to the fly and is more sure. Instructions for tying this knot can be found on the web at flyfish.ableweb.net. Give it a try!!!!

Like many of the rest of you my mainstay has been the improved clinch knott. And, like some of you, I have had that knott fail. There is nothing more madning than loosing a fish and when you get your line in find that your fly is gone and you still have the little curly end remaining from what was your knott. I do like the fact that the knott you have been describing is much easier to tie, but the drawback I have found is that you are left with a 3-inch tag end to cut off. That goes thru your tippet in a hurry, if you change your fly very much... doesn't it?
