I was looking through some of the old books in my library and thought this was interesting. They are lists of flies from different time periods. The basic premise was: flies for a well stocked fly box; top ten flies; flies that catch most of the fish; something along those lines.
This shows how much our sport changes, most often for the better (What is a Flight's Fancy anyway?) and how much it is rooted in tradition (Adams & Royal Coachman etc.) It's amazing how much some of our immitations have improved and how much more comfortable I am fishing some of todays immatations than those of yesteryear. I limited the list to mainly dry flies for brevity.
