View Full Version : December Fly Tying Night

Building on the good time and excellent turnout we had last week, we've planned another fly tying activity on Thursday December 14th at 6:30 PM at Cabelas.

I think this will be a really fun time, so if you've ever debated on whether or not to come, this is a good one to choose.

We'll be doing two different activities that night. First, is the general theme of midges. Bring your fly tying stuff and get ready to tie some flies. We will have one or two sample patterns featured on the projector for everyone to see and to tie along with if you wish. Then we'll turn everyone loose to get together, share patterns, do mini-swaps or just watch people tie.

In case you've never done a mini-swap, you'll basically partner up with 4 or 5 other tiers there, each of you will tie 4 or 5 of your favorite midge patterns and then exchange them with the others in your group. It's a good way to get your midge supply built up.

The 2nd part of the night is the "Iron Fly" competition. We'll provide each participant with the same batch of materials, two hooks and an hour to come up with two fly patterns. One fly will be judged on "fishability" (the technical part) and the other fly will be judged on "imaginative" (the artsy part). We'll have a judges panel and will announce a winner at the end of the night. If you wish to compete in this competition, please email me (frito1@gmail.com). There might be a small charge to cover the materials in the competition if I can't come up with enough donors and we'll probably limit the number of participants if we get too many people interested. We'll try to get a couple of prizes for the winner(s) as well.

Anyway, RSVP if you plan on coming so we can at least try to get an idea of the crowd this time around. We'll also post a material list for the pattern(s) featured on the projector portion of the night.

It's been a while since I've been to the site. I heard that everyone had a good time at the last one so I will try to make it to the next one.

Cheech,
That was an awsome video you and Curtis made. I love all of your "stunt strips".
Call me sometime and we'll hit the Provo.

I will fill in for NORM if he can't make it. I will make sure they are certified NORM donuts ;-).

Flysmith, all I ask is that you let us watch you eat the donuts. What kind do you like?

I was in Cabellas day before yesterday and was told that there is no tying night planned for December. They told me that they were planning on resuming them in January.

I am normally a closet donut eater but hey if it will entertain the crowd I will let you all watch me eat a donut. I wouldn't have thought you of all people Herb would have liked to watch a naked man eat a donut but hey I guess I was wrong.

All joking aside my favorite donuts are in this order...

Dunkin Donuts straight from the factory on 8600 S. and about 2900 W. Glazed or chocolate/chocolate.

The Store right by Fish Tec, glazed.

The grocery store right by the Wendys in Heber. Same side of the road, again glazed.

But not Krispy Kremes oh god how did they ever get so popular? I don't like theirs at all.

There are a couple of other good donut places in town but are tucked out of the way so I only listed the ones that would be easy for you to find.

I am a donut connisseur but Ben & Jerrys ice cream makes a good substitute.

Are the people at Cabelas going to let you use the fish tanks or pond to test the "fishability" of the fly?

J/k

It's an awesome idea!

"But not Krispy Kremes oh god how did they ever get so popular? I don't like theirs at all".

Come on Flysmith I know those Krispy Kremes at Orvis didn't just disappear every week. You had your fair share just ask Cheech.

Curtis,
What are the prizes for the fly tying contest?

Curtis Fry
12-05-2006, 04:38 PM
Well, I'm working on prizes at this point, so I can't promise anything for sure. I'm signing you up for the contest though, so you'd better be able to make it.

Does tying while eating donuts considered chumming or tipping flys?

I think I missed something.

I have never volunteered to be "donated."

Oh wait, to they have donuts there?

Looking forward to the evening. I am fortunate to be in that tying skill level where I can both teach and be taught with equal enjoyment.

FlySmyth.

PS I have a fair bit of spin fishing lures and a reel or two that will never see the water again so if whoever is charge of the donations for the boys wants to contact me I will bring it that night if you like.

To all who made the donations thanks a bunch and thanks to Lonnie for starting the whole donation process. Looks like Ill be able to make the mortgage this month after all ;). Funny thing I actually ran into the administration director for ARTEC in the FF'n section this evening he wanted to say his thanks as well. If anyone else would like to donate to the ARTEC cause we have a lot of reels that still need flyrods. Ill be dropping off the goods next week probably tuesday or wednesday. Feel free to e mail me i can make a second trip if needed.

It was also great to meet everyone and some new faces as well. If ya missed it, ya missed out on some great demos. Thanks for the tip on the CDC Jason thats gonna help alot this spring.

For me it was the first time meeting in person almost everyone there. A lot of good demos with almost every technique and material imagineable between all of the tyers in the room. Fun indeed, I wished it didn't have to end. Thanks Curtis and everyone else for taking the time to make it happen.
