View Full Version : Fly Tying Night at Cabela's
Curtis Fry
11-01-2006, 11:26 PM
In an effort to get the Salt Lake and Utah county fly tying clubs back up and running, we're going to take a stab at doing a monthly or bi-monthly fly tying meeting at Cabela's.
The first meeting is tentatively planned for Tuesday Nov 14th from 6:30 until 8:30 or 9pm. The theme will be Polish and Czech Nymphing: Tying Patterns and fishing techniques.
Ryan Barnes and Lance Egan, members of the US fly fishing team, have agreed to do the presentations and demos.
For the fly tying portion, we will post a material list as well as provide you with a material packet for purchase so that you can follow along with the fly tying demo. We will have a high-res projector with a camcorder so that people can see the tying action better than just squinting at the vise from a distance.
After the presentations are completed, we'll have a "free-tie" session from 8 until 9 where you can just sit around and tie whatever flies you want to tie. During this time, we will also have a "mini-workshop" dedicated to people who want to learn to tie or learn to tie a little better.
So, in order to get a better idea of attendance, please respond if you think you might attend. Also, if you would like to participate in the beginners mini-workshop let me know. If you don't have tying tools, we will be providing a custom fly tying kit for purchase if you want to go that route.
Anyhoo...it should be fun!

Guys,
I did some of the initial leg work to set this up and cabelas is really excited to make this work. Unfortunately after helping Ryan, Jason and Curtis pick the date, I'm going to be out of town on the 14th.
Have fun, I can't wait to hear about it.

Couple of questions, I tie somwhere between a beginner and intermediate level. (nymphs, leeches, very simple dries, beetles, crickets, etc.) Would the miniworkshop be geared toward someone like me?
Is there a cost?
Does anyone from the Heber area want to consider a carpool?

I'm going to bring my video camera. In fact, I'm going to learn how to tie this time. Something other that SJ worms and glo bugs anyway.
BTW the Strawberry Anglers Association is having the State of Strawberry presentation that night too. Sucks. I think I'll go to Cabelas anyway.

Right now I am in Tallinn, Estonia on business, and actually tried to find a place where I could flick a fly here in the Baltics. There are no guide services, and besides, it is only 15 degrees here. I wonder if Czech and Polish nymphing techniques would work in Estonia? Better yet, do you think that the browns in the MP speak Czech or Polish? Perhaps if they were confused by the language the nymph was speaking, they would be fooled into eating my fly!
I am in for the Cabela's thing guys....

Here are the materials needed for one of the flies to be demonstrated.
Hook: Scud hook #12
Thread: Black 6/0
Floss: UTC (140 denier) thread in different colors
Tail: Pheasant tail
Wingcase: Black thinskin, or scudback
Thorax: Black slf dubbing or equiv.
Just FYI, this is a woven Polish nymph. Next material list to follow.
Also, we've gotten a good response for the beginner's mini-workshops, but who would be interested in an intermediate mini-workshop? That would entail techniques such as spinning deer hair, dubbing brushes or (insert your suggestion here). Or if there is any other type of subject you'd like covered in the time after the initial tying demos, let me know.

For the beginners stuff, I think we'll just go with something simple like an Estaz bugger. Just get some Estaz of your choice and some matching marabou or arctic fox. Hooks would be a size #8 or #10 streamer hook and thread is bright orange 6/0. You can get all of that stuff at Cabela's. If they're out of Estaz, I will bring some extra packets you can buy.
Your best bet is to bring your own vise, but I think we can probably drum some up for you. If you do bring a vise, also bring a bobbin, scissors and possibly a whip finisher if you'd like.
Sounds like a great time. I wish I didn't have class and could attend.

Actually, Alan, do you have a digital camcorder? If so, let's work together to film it this thing. I have a wireless lav mic and we can get two camera angles going on. That way, for people who didn't make it, I can just post the video for them to watch portions of it online.
I had a great time tonight. I was able to learn a lot about fishing heavily wighted flies and watch and listen to the pro's tie flies and instruct us how to fish them.
Great job putting this together. I can't wait until next months gathering.

Also, next time, we'll try to open up the 2nd room and have more total space.

Steelhead, I didn't even see you there, man. But I guess after the presentations ended, I had a bunch of youngsters to contend with. I was surprised to see so many young'uns, but that's a good thing for the future.
Lonnie, to answer your question, there were actually about 1/3 of the people represented by UOTF nearest I can tell. The newspaper article and posting on the BFT and DWR forums also drummed up some others. Seriously, that room was PACKED. All comments were VERY positive to Ryan, Lance and Cheech's presentations and we're going to make this a monthly event.
Gloomis, because Cabela's is letting us do this gig in their digs, we're going to hold it there from here on out. It's also centrally located so SLC and even Northerners can make it.
Anyway, next time around (mid December), we're going to do an "Iron Fly" competition. I'll post more details later. nightfish, do you have any leftovers?

Excellent presentations, and I enjoyed watching other flies tied after the presentations too. I will keep coming as long as these are held! Ryan mentioned that next time we could open up the doors, making the room twice as big - that would be nice!
It was great to see all of the weaving techniques - I sat by Chazz and he had a technique that he was using that worked well too. I wish we had more time to see how to tie several different flies.

We've also got to give Curtis props for setting the whole thing up. I had a lot of fun. Sladester is going to be a pro, and Flysmyth was spewing out his normal lame comments;) j/k. I learned a lot from those guys and now I'm considering getting a 10' rod to try it out.
RRose, you picked the seat of the house. Chaz (Charles) is one of the most renowned guides on the Green River. He now works at Cabela's. He has got to be one of the best, and creative tyers that I have met. We have to get him up there to do a presentation on some of the flies that he ties. His flies have been featured in magazines, and I think Orvis picked up a bunch of his patterns to sell.
Thanks again Lance and Ryan.

I had a good time last night. It was really good to see a few of the czech flies and how they are tied. I have been reading up a lot more on their style of fishing. Lance and Ryan gave a lot of imformative information and history which was nice.
There was not much time to tie but it was good to see people. I think having the second room would make it less crowded. Of course I got hit with the traffic coming in from Bountiful and was late. Maybe next time it will be better to arrive early! CROWDED for sure.
Great job in hosting this night. Awesome night.
Also, a site that I frequent is http://www.czechnymphs.com/ if your interested in tying some of these flies or want some patterns, check it out. You can also read some articles and find out why the Czech's kick so much ass in the World Flyfishing Championships and competitions. Good articles that will give you a bit more history and information. Also hook recommendations and tactics for tying. ~enjoy

Thanks to Curtis, Lance & Ryan. I really got a lot out of this. The information shared by Lance & Ryan was very interesting. Looking forward to the next gathering. It was good to see faces I new and meet and put faces to the names I know.
The only suggestion I have is that there be more time for free tying after the presentations. I know last night that all the time available was used. Maybe the next event could be on a Sat or Sun. My two cents worth of thought any way.

Hey, let's not forget about Lonnie...he's the one that initially got the ball rolling on this....and Curtis of course did a great job in finishing up the details and making it happen. I'm excited for the iron vice comp. Here's another idea for you Curtis, how about a "blind" tying comp with just a few guys. Here's how it would go down; blind fold the tyers and give them a bunch of materials to tie a pheasant tail, hares ear, etc, and see if they can do it blindly. Best looking fly wins.

Well, two of those youngsters were mine and I guess I'm a real novice because I did learn a lot at the kiddie training with them. I still can't make the whip finish tool work without everything coming apart before I'm done. I must be a slow learner.
I also brought a fishing friend at the last minute who provided the free entertainment (what is dubbing...)
My thanks go out to everyone involved with the event.

You're not a slow learner. The tool is just not as easy as some guys make it look. I consider myself an experienced tier, but I'd rather whip finish with my fingers than rely on one of those things. I just never got the knack and found my fingers worked just as well.....
I also brought a fishing friend at the last minute who provided the free entertainment (what is dubbing...)
No offense to your buddy. As Grizz was so kind to point out, we all asked that question at one point in our lives. Most of us just didn't do it in front of a crowd of people who knew the answer. I applaud the guy for being willing to ask a legitimate question in order to understand the presentations. I'm sure he wasn't the only person in the room that didn't know dubbing from Dilbert.

For those of you that attended the fly tying night at Cabela's a couple of weeks ago (or if you didn't make it and want to see what went on), I've finished the DVD of the presentation. A number of you have been asking about this and I had planned on loading the video footage online, but even with editing, it came out to almost an hour long. So I figured I'd just put it into a DVD and make it available.
So for anyone interested, you can get a copy here:
http://sweetflies.com/Home/tabid/175/List/0/ProductID/71/Default.aspx
I hope $10 isn't breaking anyone's bank...I'm just trying to cover some costs on the whole deal.
