So, who's got the best black foam beetles? I'd like to see some pics, if possible.

I need to find a good pattern...

One thing I miss about the south is the yearly "hatch" of "Junebugs" and "Japanese Beatles" Both are on the big side, but the junebugs are HUGE (over an inch long). Think size 6 or 8. the fun part was as kids we would catch them, tie some sewing string to their hind leg and have a flying pet for the afternoon. Good times.

The japanese beatles are smaller but more plentiful. The trout in the south are opportunistic so you can get them to come up to these fairly easily. Guys would tie fancy patterns with green metal florists foil. The were more for catching fishermen than fish I think.

usually in early summer when the grass is really starting to get taller around the edges. I usually use my sinking line and tie on a black beetle and a pheasanttail. works pretty well, usually on the rainbows.

I've got the best beetle pattern. How many do you need? They even sing, "I wanna Hold Your Hand!"

I tie one similar to Nightfish's, only with rubber legs instead of tinsel. I tie them in black and in tan. A breeze to tie and very effective. I'm not sure a lot of bells and whistles add much to a beetle pattern.

I just wanted to see what kind of variations some of you used on your beetles.

I'm going to attempt to tie up a handful -- they look like a very simple tie. I guess you could get extreme, and make it complicated, but really, it's just a beetle!

Something to try is different colors. I most always use black foam, but use different colored under bodies. My three favorite colors are peacock, light tan or off yellow and purple. I do the same thing with GT triple doubles and some other ant patterns. Generally, peacock on sunny-bright days and tan or purple on rainy and or cloudy days.
