This rod was my first lightweight, true investment. I wanted a good all around rod, but I also wanted a lightweight for some of my favorite streams. After a number of casts on several rods, I "fell in love" with this rod. Anyway, it feels more moderate fast, so, it casts line and protects tippets in a great way. It can cast everything from midges to small clousers, without thinking. I do have some problems casting weighted buggers. I can cast well enough with the wind, but that may be a product of the rocket tapered line. Regardless, I have fished the Pere Marquette, Provo, and Huntington Creek with the same rod. It has a very strong butt section for fighting and a fine tip for action. That is a wonder combination. When I broke the tip section, St Croix quickly replaced it and sent me on my way to fish again. This rod is definitely my favorite rod, and most definitely my most-used rod.

I have the same rod and agree it is one of my favorite rods! I Own four St. Croix rods(7'9"3wt UL,9'5wt UL, 9' 4wt Imperial, 8.5' 4-5wt 4 piece Imperial)and enjoy each of them. As for their cusomer service it is exceptional. I broke my 9' 5wt and it was my fault so I sent in a photo showing a nice brown and one of their rods in the background and they quickly sent me a free St. Croix hat with my replaced rod! For the money they are the best rod and company around, period!

I bought this blank from the Anglers Workshop. Built it last winter and use it alot. It took a while to get used to it but I really do like it. I always told myself that I would only use it to throw dries but I soon found that small nymphs were fun also. This has become my only choice for smaller streams. Only drawback: If it's blowing-leave it in the car.

If it is blowing, it still does an OKAY job, since the line can cut through the wind better than a larger weight line. Now, if it is BLOWING, leave it in the car. That's just what I have experienced.
