I use a dubbing loop a lot in my tying but I never have used those fancy tools they sell. I have a tool that has a funky shaped hook and I close and twist the loop with it. I just pull the loop up and twist it until I have they right density. I'm not even sure that's what my tool was meant for but it works.
I am curious about those heavy duty dubbing twisters. Do they give you more control? Are they just faster? What advantages do they give you?

I use one of those egg sinkers with a brass loop. Cut the loop open, deburr it and use it as a hook. Not pretty, but not $20 either.

Ok-
I've never used a dubbing loop but I tried Enrique Pagkjsjfs's streamer loops and liked it a lot. How do you do them? And has anyone used Petitjean's Magic dubbing tool? I saw some stuff on it in a few magazines and it looked interesting, but if the same thing can be done without the money and fancy stuff I'd be interested to know more. Is there links somewhere? I'm interested in Petitjean's magic tool though, just one of those gimmicks that looks fun to have.

I watched Jason use one at the Outdoor Expo this past March. They look pretty sweet. The one he was using had some ball bearings inside of the tool so that he could hold it with one hand and spin it with the other. All it needed was one spin and it would go forever.

Foamy -
do a search on this site. I seem to recall sombody made a Petijean magic tool using binder clips and a small block of wood and reported that it worked well.

I use the dubbing tool from Wasatch Custom Angling products (www.flytyingtools.com) and it works great. It's got some sort of spinning bearing or something inside (similar to what Jason uses). I'm sure other ones will work too, but I like the way I get good control on this one with the way and speed it spins.

I use an electronics test clip. The hook type for spinning dubbing loops. The aligator clips are for something else.

Yes, get the one with the skateboard wheel bearing in it. It's pretty sweet......best I've used. It should because it cost $20. :-) It's one of the best tying tools I have. Wasatch has a good one too. http://www.flytyingtools.com/webpages/tools/turbDubWhirl.htm I can't remember what brand mine was but I do see it occassionally at the shops

So do I.
Large size paper clip.
Easy, my daughter uses it. started when she was 6 ( 8 now)
at least for your basic dubbing loop.
son uses it as well - he reminded me!

I used a needle with a hook on it for years. I have tried almost all the different types. I now use the one from Hareline. I really like the speed it twists the loop. I dub a lot with seal and it seam to work the best. http://www.hareline.com/images/harelinejpegweb/GT64.jpg
