View Full Version : Fly Tying on a Plane.
Taking a trip this week, long flights, will they let you carry on a small set of scissors? Other tools?

NO. I used to do this all the time (until 9/11), not anymore.

You might check. They are now allowing scissors up to a certain length.
When I went to Alaska and recently flew Vegas to Denver - I had my vest full of hooks, flies, etc.
If your scissors are small enough, you might get away with it. I would call the airline to confirm.

This may help you a little. The airport security is not controlled by the airline. Try going to the following web site for information:
www.tsa.gov/traveler/airtravel/index.shtm
At some locations, they will not allow you to carry on hooks, especially Canada.

but never tried it yet. I remember reading that they lightened up the rules on small scissors. I asked the guy at security once about fly tying stuff. He was a tyer and said scissors were the only issue. Hooks are no problem. He suggested nail clippers. might be a pain for elk hair and deer hair but ok for most tying related cutting.

A friend of mine just flew from Mobile, AL to Reno, NV and they didn't stop him from carrying on his tying stuff. I don't think he tied on the plane but his stuff was carry on. I would definetly check with the airlines before you get stuff set up for the flight.
