I saw Joanie slamming fish with a hares ear once a year or so ago. She even gave me one. Silly me I fished it until I lost it. I never memorized the colors of it. There in lies my question to all of you...

What Color dubbing do you use to tie your hares ears?

What dubbing do you use?

What modifications have you had success with i.e. flash back bead, no bead?

Thanks.

FlySmyth.

Carpmans "surveyor" seems to be producing well. Tungsten bead silver wire pheasant tail fibers for tail and rainbow sow/scud dubbin with pearl flash down the spine.

I don't dub with actual hares ear anymore. For that buggy look I like to mix natural or dark possum with a coarser dubbing such as angora goat, seal, wool or sometimes ice dub. The possum is soft and the other dubbings imitate the appendages well and give good contrast.

I don't tie the traditional "Hare's Ear" usually, but my searching pattern uses real seal dubbing in olive, gray or light brown/tan. I pick out the fibers for a buggier look. It has a much better action in the water than does wascally wabbit.

Call me somewhat traditional but I like the natural stuff but Ive been using it in a soft hackle style with partrage and a gold bead. Not new but effective.
Also dide olive works.

I use the natural stuff also. Gold bead and flashback for nymphing, and I do a dry with a mallard wing usually in a size 14 or 16 that makes a good searching dry.

Honestly, I'm a big fan of the traditional hare's ear, tied straight and in a variety of sizes, down to maybe a size 20 or even 22. Of course, I use all kind of variations from flashback material to rubber legs and everything in between, but I'm not sure any of that really improves much on the old standby, which I tie from a natural hare's mask in a variety of colors from cream to dark brown or almost black. Skip nymph's a great variation too, but again, I'm not sure it's any more effective.

A true Hares Ear pattern states that you use the rabbit's fur directly from a natural hares mask.....trimmed near the "ears" and dubbed on as you normally would....minus all the gaurd hairs. I don't think there's a specific color other than natural....which could be tan, brown, gray, etc. I personally like my hares ears with a more gray tint. In short, it doesn't matter what color you tie your hares ear patterns with.....just select a natural hares mask and have at it.
