A buddy of mine who is a beginning flyfisherman was fishing the provo last saturday and soon after went on a walk with his wife on the provo river trail. When he came back he noticed that all of his gear including his new St.Croix rod and reel setup,4 fly boxes, vest, waders, boots (who steals boots?) I would like to know why this happened and who did it. If there is anyone out there who has info about this please email me. Hows that for a sad story!!!

Savages in this town I tell ya!
that's too bad, was it taken from his vehicle? Was it locked? Did they bash a window? Were the proper authorities contacted & a report filed?
Check your local pawn shops, the stuff may show up in one of them.

thanks for the sympathy. I just cant believe it. The doors were locked and everything. He said that they had pushed the power window down in the back seat. I will tell you who it was gall darnet, it was that darn sasquatch that ate the 40 school lunches from the school bus that was parked in that same area.

Dang, I'm originally from California so I know what its like to get stuff stolen (my skateboard from under my feet, a bike, my parents wheels off their car, my friend's weed whacker before my very eyes, etc)...its no fun. If this is a continuing problem then my advice to everyone would be 1) Park your car near high traffic areas (foot or cars) if possible and 2) Put all your gear out of sight (trunk, etc).

I hear ya its a shame that people have to be like that. Your lucky they left the car in Cali they woulda just drove the whole damn car off and you would have been lucky to get it back. If theres anyway i can help with flies let me know ill tie ya up a dozen or so. Just a reminder of reports from last year, there have been numerous people reporting theft on the Weber just like this. Lock your valuables out of sight and if you can help it dont advertise on your car. Most thieves look for whats conveniant or what they can nab quickly so just keep this in mind.

Really sucks, I know how you feel I lost all my stuff two different times. Vehicle burglaries happen quite often on all sections of the Provo. The bandits sit and watch you get ready to fish, then hit you vehicle after you leave knowing you are going to be gone for awhile. The only way to catch these dirt bags is to keep an eye out and report any activity that looks out of place. Prevention is also a good thing. Don’t leave anything in plain view. If they cant see anything worth taken they will move to the next target.

Yeah, that's a bummer for sure. But for this reason, I've taken my huge gear bag and broken it down into what I'll need for fishing on a given day. I leave all my reels in a reel case, all my fly boxes in a big bag and leave them both at home. Then I take only one or two reels and only 4 or 5 fly boxes (all of which I carry on me while fishing) and then I have only one extra rod in the truck, usually hidden under a seat.
From what I've heard, this stuff will typically end up on e-bay, so you might have your friend check that out. This is a more common situation now not just in fly fishing but with golf clubs and other outdoor sports where people leave equipment in their vehicles. Just don't advertise your gear by pasting Sage or Orvis stickers all over your windows. You may be "cool" but soon you'll be sorry.
Maybe we need to start gluing those fake security cameras with the blinking red lights in our vehicles and put a sticker on the car that says "Wireless WebCam Surveilance".

All kidding aside, this is terrible. It sounds like his whole fishing arsenal is gone. He probably had all his gear with him in the truck.
I have often wondered about leaving my truck and taking the long walk to my favorite spots. I usually park where several other cars are, but not many people are around to keep an eye on things. We should all pay close attention to anything suspicious. It is the only way we can stop this from happening, or we can catch some of these a$$@@les. Unfortunately, stolen gear is too easy to sell nowdays. Anybody can be a "fence". Pawn shops aren't the only outlet.
I used to feel safe camping too. I figured we were all in the same situation, why would we steal from each other. A camp ground host told me that what often happens is people cruise the campgrounds looking for stuff and make a quick getaway. Sad state of affairs for the outdoors people. I hope this friend of yours doesn't give up the sport.

I pack heat, because it is to the point now that people are going to start stealing it out of our hands. I always carry my glock with me mostly for my peace of mind.

I wouldn't hesitate if he was trying to steal something from me than he is going to have a weapon of some kind. That puts my life in danger and there wouldn't be a hesitation

Good ethics there carter.... Shoot people without hesitation, OVER FISHING GEAR!!! I mean I love my gear like everyone else, but human life, even a scum sucking thief's life is worth more than the most expensive fishing gear.
Bringing a handgun fishing (unless in case of bears or lions :) ) only causes more violence then it would ever reduce.
Carrying a gun won't make you safer, and definitely doesn't make you more of a man. I'm all for second amendment liberties, but, it doesn't mean that handguns are the answer to everything.
Then don't carry one. It doesn't matter to me. I do know I am safe and so is my gear. You are right a handgun isn't the answer to everything but it will make somebody think twice about if they are not sure who has a gun or not. By the way I carry a handgun on my side everywhere I go not just fishing.

I'm all for responsible concealed firearm carry, but make sure you know where you stand legally before you draw your weapon. State law says that you can use deadly force to defend yourseld or a third party from an attack that is likely to result in serious boldily injury or death. You may not however use deadly force to defend your personal property (unless we are talking defense of habitation). The way I see it though, is if I surprised a thief in the act of stealing from me, I would confront them but not draw my weapon unless and until I could articulate that I was at risk of serious injury or death from that person.

I disagree.
You can have my fly rod when you pry it from my cold dead hands.

That is why I mentioned the part about him carrying a type of weapon to steal from me. If I didn't feel like my life was in danger I would not use deadly force.

hand guns are good, but what we really need to be packing are long range rifles. Just think, if a dude is thinking about breaking into a vehicle all he has to do is look in the immediate area. But if he knows that the owner of the vehicle may have a shot at him from several hundred yards, he'll have to think twice. Hey, it works in Wyoming, why not here.
I don't even like to carry a landing net much anymore. I think my Bushmaster A1 .223 with extra 30 rd. mags and red dot scope might get a little uncomfortable slung over my back all day. But you have a good point, a couple dozen warning shots might scare them off before they get my ashtray change.

Just carry 2 guns with ya. When ya shoot the poor basturd put the throw-away in his hands and claim self defense.

I was thinking more along the lines of a browning 7-mag, loaded hot with 110 grain hollow points. The best part of that would be that if you are a good shot you wouldn't have to worry about justifying self defense. The guy would just end up on a missing persons report.

So many things could go wrong. Better to just keep a shovel in your trunk.
I have sprayed several people with pepper sray (don't ask;-). Most of the time it has the desired effect, which is to take the will to fight out of a subject. There are those who can fight right through it though. Certain drugs and mental states can also make someone not respond to the effects of pepper spray. Bear mace is a stronger type of pepper spray that is not intended for use on humans. Use it on a person at your own risk! Some states will charge you with a felony for using bear mace as a self defense tool.
