I've seen on another thread that Dennis had recruited some of you to tie at the ISE show. Here are a few questions.
1. What are you planning on tying?
2. What time do you go on the stage?
3. What patterns do you choose from? Easy or Somewhat intermediate?
4. I'd like come by and just give our guys some support.
Thanks UFG

UFG,
Here's a link for the main fly tying theater schedule: http://www.sportsexpos.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=ViewSchedule&ScheduleNumber=155&LocationNumber=7
In addition to the main theater area, there are also 4 or so tyers that tie on the tables at the entrance to the presentation area. This is usually a really fun time to tie flies and chat with people about the patterns.
In addition to my Provo River presentations, I will by tying up some Bass flies and some other stillwater stuff as well. Mostly it's a mix of some easy flies and then some more difficult ones too.
Look forward to seeing you there...

Here is my advise: While watching the tiers in the theater, don't buy into the idea of the "Mystic fly fisherman or tier idea." We're all just tiers. With a little practice, anyone can tie a fly, including the very young. With a little practice, anyone can catch a fish on a fly. Most of the show is just a bunch of hype by guys who have been doing it for a long time, or some that have been in it for a few years and want to be recognized as experts.
Sage advise: "If you want to catch more trout. . . go fishing more often!"

I'll be tying Friday from 3-6, and Saturday starting at 10. I won't be in the theater (believe me, that's a good thing). I think I'm going to tie a little bit of everything. I'll bring plenty of snowshoe hare's foot to tie baetis, midges, and PMDs. I have been messing around with wire a lot lately too.
Fulano, you need to come to the show, I have a certain yellow sally pattern that you let me borrow. I have some variations I want you to try out.
BTW, based on wildnative's post, I fit into the category of "I really suck, but want to be recognized as an expert."

For hooks and an ice cold pepsi, I could tie up a bunny or two.

I'll be tying Friday from 6-9 and then on sat from 4-7.
I will be tying a lot of Provo River flies. Baetis, PMD, Sows, Midges etc.
Wildnative has some very sound advise:)

I personally don't even think about it to this level nor do I know of anyone that does this for personal agrandizement (is that a word?) or hype. (Robert, you seem to be very interested in this aspect of it: http://www.utahonthefly.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12360)
Most guys I've talked to just do it cuz they like to tie and have a good time with it. For myself, I like to tie flies and I like to shoot the breeze with people about it. Plus, I really like to hear myself talk...

I would have to second what Curtis is saying. It's nice to tie with people and find what they like to tie and create new patterns or improve on patterns. I would say that the satisfaction is tying something, and it works. Thats the best part of tying let alone being creative.

I think you are somewhat the guru of all that braided stuff you tie. That is some pretty cool stuff. hey you still have soem of those braided tail blue winged olives you tied a couple fo years ago. I would be itnerested in getting some of those.

I can get you some. If you are stopping by the expo, I can leave some at the theater with your name on them, if not just let me know where to send them.
I hope I'm not touching a nerve with my post. It is something that I'm interested in as well as somewhat bothered by. I don't have the time to post it on here, nor do I feel anyone is interested in what I have to say. Maybe when I have time I can try to explain, or if you meet me personally and ask, I'll try to explain.

I think I get what your saying. It's not really touched a nerve. I'm a crappy tyer and I know it. I don't personally have the patience to tie really long and complicated flies. I was watching mickey up at fish tech work on learning one of your hopper patterns the other day. Looked pretty damn hard to me. Your stuff is pretty intricate and I admire anyone who takes the time to tie it.
I will be at the ISE Friday night, most of Saturday, and possibly Sunday.

RAW, I was thinking about it a bit and I think I can nail down where you are probably a little bothered -- would it be people that make a living in the industry and take things a little overboard (not all of them, just some) to pimp their methods, flies etc? I would have to amend my previous post to take those guys into account. That can become bothersome as well. I think I know where you're coming from now that I remember we talked about it at the show last year for a while...

THIS IS THE WD-87!! it will catch more fish than any other nymph in the WORLD! It's outlawed in the entire state of Oregon.

I got it!!! Denny irritates everyone. Heard those stories a lot. Cary tells a great one about trying to buy a fly for his for high country golden trout fishing. Denny kept telling him how great this new fly was and wondered why Cary would want the other fly. I think Cary finally gave up and bought the knockoffs up at fish tech. Maybe he will pipe in. Funny Story.

Better post a picture and a recipe so it can be made illegal in the whole state of Utah as well:)
Dave, you pretty much nailed it. the point being that I walked up to his booth fully prepared to drop a wad of cash on a few dozen specific flies, and after my (one-way)dialog with the man, I just couldn't bring myself to make a purchase. Damn, I really wanted those fies, too.

Just wait until the WD-97 comes out. It's only "one more" than the 87...
