How do you determine the rights size bead for the hook? Is there a formula and WTF do they not just print the hook size the bead is intended for on the bead pkg?

Why is bead pronounced beed when head is not a heed?
is it the same reason that a bass can't play the bass?

The first question is serious please help.

My rule of thumb is to find the smallest bead that will fit around bend of the hook. If it doesn't fit, it's too small.

You can add bigger beads. I don't think the fish really care if it's a little bigger than its supposed to be. If it's so big that it might slip over the eye of the hook, use a piece of thin wire to secure the bead in place. I do this on small tungsten zebra midges. Learned it from Ed.

The reason they don't print a chart on the bead packaging is because the fit can very greatly depending on the model & mfg of the hook. For instance, a TMC 2487 #22 can fit a 2mm bead, but the TMC2457 of the same size won't, due to the heavier wire (example for demonstration purposes only. Actual fit may vary). Figure that, plus all the different models from TMC the bead could possibly fit, then compound that with the same info from Mustad, Dai-Riki, Daiichi, Targus, ABI...

Email me & I can supply you with a hook-fit chart. I can't guarantee it will have the hook model or mfg you use, and I can't guarantee it will match up with beads from other companies. It will not match for glass beads.

Sometimes I'll tweak the hook a little to get a bead on, but I've ran into breakage problems this way. An exacto knife to ream out the bead has worked for me at times too. I like to over-size my beads, so I'm always struggling to get 'em on the hook.... :-(

Heres some bead to hook charts I found on the web.

Once youve picked one that you like, go to 'File', in the upper left hand side of your browser and click on ,'Save page as', and store it on your hard drive.

The Winter 06 issue of Flyfishing &Tying Journal has an article by Jim Schollmeyer on using beads in tying.
Here is the guidelines he suggests;

Metal beads;
5/64 w/ sz 18
3/32 w/ sz 16
7/64 w/ sz 14 or 16
1/8 w/ sz 12 or 14
5/32 w/ sz 10 or 12
3/16 w/ sz 10

And glass beads;
15/0 x-small 18 or 20
11/0 small for 14 or 16
8/0 med for 8,10, or 12
6/0 large 2,4, or 6
4/0 x-large 1/0 and 2

These are given bead size to hook size, just to be clear on things. Also, try the bead out on the hook sometimes it may be too big or too small. I have found this to be a good guideline from a reliable source.

If any body wants some info or would like a copy of the article let me know (I think this is legal to do on here, or at least hope it is). I could maybe email a copy or send one in the mail.
