Went fishing and camping near the Upper Provo by Mirror Lake Highway, the fishing was pretty good, especially for a beginner like me, but I wasn't too fond of being awakened by the snorts of a moose right outside my tent.

My wife and I were there with some friends and had seen a huge bull wandering around a few hundred yards from our campsite earlier in the day. It woke me up a couple of times in the night, breaking off branches in the trees around our site. Then at 5 a.m. I heard it tipping over our camp chairs and generally rummaging around. Prayed it wouldn't come to the tent, but the next thing I knew it was breathing/grunting mere inches from my head and it woke my wife up with an antler in her side. A few screams (from my wife) later it was back in the bushes and we had escaped to the car. Quite an eventful night.

To make a long question shorter, does anyone have suggestion on keeping the wildlife at a safe distance? I figure we were pretty lucky to have not been trampled or gored by the moose, but I don't really want to chance it again. Would pepper spray or bear repellant work on any animal? What about an air horn?

By the way, the fish were rising like crazy up there. Caught a couple little ones, which I was happy about as I'm still very much a beginner.

(Any suggestions for a good, durable tent? The moose shredded one side of ours.)

Try Recreation Outlet, they usually sell nice Kelty and other brand tents that have a cosmetic blemish. I had a Kelty 4 season tent that had a 1" rip in the mesh (they gave me the stuff to fix it) and I got it for $125.00 or so. Also try Kirkhams across the street, Springbar tents are the best.

You should try the air horn but use it before the offending beast is standing right next to your tent as he will be more likely to hit you in his frenzy to flee the scene.

Kirkhams has an excellent department for repairing tents, backpacks and outdoor gear. You might want to go in and see what it would cost to patch your old tent.
