Aloha, the papio have been running at coconut island. I caught some last week with conventional gear. The locals line up and chuck all kinds of lures and bait at them. They are feeding on a large school of sardines. It has been raining for a couple of days now and the water is very stained. I went down tonight and tried my 8wt. I tied on a chartreuse green and white clouser, and cast in the muddy water. I got a white papio to hit the fly and fought him to the rocks. About 8 guys got out of their vehicles and started casting. I put the papio in a bucket and kept casting. Wham I had another one on, and more locals started fishing. Problem is they weren't catching, just mumbling, "fricking haole". I had another one hit, but he was so big I couldn't lift him, and after a 10 minute fight he got off. It was great to out do the locals. It is merry monarch week, and the rain will end when all the tourists leave. Next week we are going off-shore, can't wait to try nightfish's new flies, thanks Nick. Have a good one, Mems.
