What the heck's goin' on 'round here? I've never seen so many posts and questions about pontooning and still watering on my life? Has this become Utah Still Water on the Fly (USWOTF)??
Leave the still water alone for heck sakes - don't ya know it's for sissies who can't properly work rivers/streams? Besides that, there aren't many fish in still waters and 90% of the area in a lake is devoid of fish. And . . . the fish that are there are SMALL. And dries and the pure, puristic approach are rarely effective on still waters, and . . . and . . . . and . . . .
Get back on them rivers, boys . . . you know what's good for ya, now don't ya??

I hear you Sumner. Stillwater basically sucks... But nothing compares to that TUG TUG that you feel on the end of your line.

My order of choice is stillwater with a streamer in a float tube, dry-fly fishing a small creek, and way last is nymphing.
I like stillwater streamer fishing because:
- You have all the room in the world to cast.
- The line and tippet you use is large, easy to tie, and rarely breaks.
- The fish are bigger if you get your line down deep.
- Steamers are easy, fast, and cheap to tie.
- Being in a float tube with a motor is relaxing and if you get tired of stripping line you can troll around and take a nap.
- Still water is much less crowded.
- You can look at the scenery because you are not always having to stare at a fly, line, or strike indicator.
- Its the only method that you feel the strike and instead of see it.
This doesn't mean that I don't like the other methods of fishing and actually do less stillwater than anything else because the time it take to get there and get setup.

Stillwater rocks!!!! You can fish inlets from a tube in ways you could never do it from shore. Dry fly action is insane on a tube. Stocking fish on a lake that are taking drys is so much fun. There is so many ways to enjoy yourself on tube I can't even begin to explain. I still like to stream/river fish but I would not give up my pontoon for anything. Wow, I hope all you guys that dislike stillwater stay away because it is more enjoyment for the rest.
PS: the cooler is never further than arms lenght.

Even my old girlfriend said she felt like lazy White Trash floating around on the lake instead of walking endlessly up and down the river and up again looking for an open place to cast.

Damn flat water flippermen, merely a bait fisherman with a little longer rod & fancified gear. Flyfishing is meant for moving water, that is, unless your a dry fly only flyfisherman, then it's ok to throw on stillwaters.........., but only with a PA!

Sounds like Sumner has been skunked a few too many times on the flat water! It's a nice diversion for me occasionally. My Dad does not river fish any longer because of his eyesight and age but loves the pontoon. It's about the only way I can spend time on the water with him. I hope my kids will follow my lead. When I am too old to see a #24 dry the company will be nice.
Being a purist is one thing, enjoying life is another....

Sumner is just trying to get a rise with this post. He fishes stillwater almost exclusively and though I don't doubt he has had a few skunks in his life, he is, arguably, one of the better stillwater fishers on this site.
He just doesn't want others to crowd his territory!! :)

Actually, I'm more insulted that you would use the word old on a forum like this. There are many of us that can take that as a real insult. Of course, you were talking about your OLD girlfriend so maybe you were letting us know you like your girlfiends a little more travelled.
