So today my daughter announces that she wants her own fly rod for her Birthday. She has been using a mediocre 8.5 foot 5wt. medium fast action rod of mine that she does okay with. I want to build her something decent in a 5 wt, mid flex, medium action that is a 7.5 or 8 ft. At the same time, I don't want to spend a fortune for fear that as soon as she turns 13 it will no longer be "cool" to be seen with dad and the rod will be forgotten. Any suggestions on a blank to buy? Anyone know of some factory blems out there for sale? (I got a GL3 blem a while back that was a great deal)

Any help?

Whatever it is, get something you would like to fish with too for if she does decide to hang it up later. Then you have a new rod.

Mason,

I've though of that, but it is a tough call. Do I build a rod with a purple aluminum reel seat and pink wraps in hopes that she will think it is cool to have the only girly rod in existence and therefore want to fish more often? Or do I build something I really want figuring I may in actuality be building myself another rod under the "guise" of building one for Anna?

Wright and Mcgill has come out with a rod made specifically for women called the Fly Girl. Might be something to consider. Purple blank if I remember right. If it does not work out, you could just use it on waters you know noone else is fishing. ;)
