So when are we going to hit Pelican this year? My suggestion would be later than what it was last year. I think we were a little early.

Maybe the week before or after the Starvation trip in June (23rd & 24th?). I know my wife will be happy to know I'm taking off for yet another trip just weeks before the baby comes...

You can't beat those big 'Gills though.

Jason

When is the baby due?

I may have to "combine" my Starvation and Pelican days. My June is looking busy. I feel a little better about doing a trip before the weekend of June 24th, maybe the 10th or 17th. Whatever we decide I'm game. We might want to wait a month or two before we decide and see how the spring weather turns out. If it's wet and colder than usual, I think the action won't turn on until mid to late June, kind of like last year. If it's a warm hot spring, then the end of May or first of June we could see some good gill' action. Whatever happens I know I'v got my June reserved for Pelican and Starvation. Can't wait.

Baby comes in the 2nd week of July, so I should be good. Yeah, I say let's keep some dates open so we can decide what would be better as it gets closer. I realized that Bizarro UOTF (as defined by cheech and MOKE) is also planning a trip there as well. But they're hitting "Pellican" and not "Pelican" I assume that's the same place ;) So maybe it will be one big 'gill-fest. You mind if we crash your party JayMorr?

It's weird, but so far all but one of my bigger planned trips are warmwater so far. I feel so dirty...(jk).

Dirty Dogs. I think Jason has the right idea about Pelican. We should wait until later in spring to plan it. I know it's hard to do it that way, but...

I'm all for heading out with Jay and the crew. There's nothing like telling stories around a campfire with Rockstar, Slayer, Jay, and Jason.

Ezle- I think they caught the bear that was attacking your tent last year.

Not sure when bizarro is planning on going. I have left the cordinating of that to those that want to go. I am just along for trip/camp fire laughs.

I hope to make multiple trips. I will plan on the UoTF trip.

May or June sounds good. Smack Pellican!

Good thing, I would have had to bring my 12 gauge I used this past summer hunting wolverines in Alaska with my uncle.

Mason,

I was going to leave that one alone, but was sure someone would remind us of what truly happened. Here you go:

Always go heavily armed into Alaska..

One BIG Grizzly....
The following (first two) pictures are of a guy who works for the US
Forest Service in Alaska and his trophy bear. He was out deer hunting
last week when a large grizzly bear charged him from about 50 yards away.
The guy unloaded his 7mm Mag Semi-automatic rifle into the bear and it
dropped a few feet from him. The big bear was still alive so he reloaded
and shot it several times in the head.
The bear was just over one thousand six hundred pounds. It stood 12' 6"
high at the shoulder,14' to the top of his head. It's the largest grizzly
bear ever recorded in the world. Of course, the Alaska Fish and Wildlife
Commission did not let him keep it as a trophy, but the bear will be
stuffed and mounted, and placed on display at the Anchorage airport (to remind
tourist's of the risks involved when in the wild).
Based on the contents of the bear's stomach, the Fish and Wildlife
Commission established the bear had killed at least two humans in the
past 72 hours. His last meal was the unlucky nature buff in the third
picture.
The US Forest Service, backtracking from where the bear had
originated, found the hiker's 38-caliber pistol emptied. Not far from
the pistol was the remains of the hiker The other body has not been found.
Although the hiker fired six shots and managed to hit the grizzly with four shots
they ultimately found four 38 caliber slugs along with twelve 7mm slugs
inside the bear's dead body. It only wounded the bear and probably
angered it. The bear killed the hiker an estimated two days prior to the bear's
own death by the gun of the Forest Service worker.
Think about this, If you are an average size man, you would be level
with the bear's belly button when he stood upright, the bear would look
you in the eye when it walked on all fours! To give additional perspective,
consider that this particular bear, standing on its hind legs, could walk up
to an average single story house and look over the roof, or walk up to a
two story house and look in the bedroom windows.

Sorry for the Hijack.

Because my job requires I set my vacation months in advance I am going to
Pelican on June 3-5. Someone said that day is free fishing day, however, I could care less. There are reeds to fish for every one.

I am going to Starvation June 17-19

Oh well. Still a big freaking bear and some cool photos. Well, except for the one with the guy all shreaded. That is kind of nasty.

Well, I think EZ can sleepy easy. I doubt we'll run into anymore bears at Pelican. Maybe a wolf or coyote, but not a bear. Either way, we'll definitely do something in June or late May.

I bet it was just the neighbors dogs or something, but whatever it was it didn't sound too pleasant. Then again, maybe cheech was just sleep walking and snoring at the time. You know that deviated septum can really reverburate:-p

the fact that you know abou my septum really freaks me out. Just so you know, I limped for a week after that because I stepped in a hole as we were running away.

After looking at the calendar I will have to cast my vote for the weekend of June 10th or later.

Anybody decide on the dates yet ? I need to schedule the time off work.. :)

Curtis Fry
03-14-2005, 03:09 PM
Well I'd vote for the 10th and 11th seeing as how the Starvation trip is the following week. That is unless we want to combine the two. Maybe Pelican on Friday and Starvation Saturday the 18th?

What's the preference?

Thinking of going over but only if Easy (the wild animal bait) camps over next to cardiac. AND he doesn't lock himself out of his car again, ie takes extra keys. And...he cooks. You missed out big time if you didn't get a taste of his fish with some cosmic sauce.

04-01-2005, 04:45 AM
Doug, hopefully Pelican and Starvation. You going?
D-Bell you and the Mrs. better be there with the Silver Bullet.
Ezle is not going to camp anywhere near us. We don't need no stinkin bear bait.

Trout4x

So what are the dates?

Jason
04-01-2005, 07:06 AM
If this spring continues to be cool and wet then I would anticipate the action to get good in June so the second or third weekend of June. Why don't we say the weekend of the 10th or the 17th for now, and then in about 4-6 weeks we can finalize a date...barring weather conditions and forecasts. Last year we went a week or two early so the bluegill weren't quite on their spawning beds yet. I say mid June we should be fine.

D-Bell

I'm planning on the trip. Don't know whether Leeroy and Drew (grandson) will be able to tear themselves away from soccer or hockey or not. Just can't say for sure yet. Maybe we can put EZ in a hammock high up in a tree next to you and Johnnie's palatial tent complex, and everyone can get some sleep. Hope Doug makes it.

Just to be clear.......
The Starvation trip is June 17th & 18th
My dates are set in stone, because of work I can not change my dates and I had to ask for them in January.
I think Stout and Jason are on board for those dates
-
I will be going to Pelican June 3rd and 4th for the same reason as above
with or w/out UOTF
-
I have a hall pass for both trips and I can not wait!

Mitch, we'll be up there June 4th, Saturday. I think I'm staying over Saturday night and coming home Sunday. Come on up.

I heard that Pelican is really starting to fish good with the warmer weather we've had the last few weeks. It should be prime time the weekend we'll be there. I'm stoked. I gotta start stocking the fly boxes.

Does anyone know an exact date for the Starvation trip?

This sounds like a annual trip.....How do you typically fish it...by boat or float tube?

If it is going to be later in June. I might be interested in joining a group that is going.

Thanks for any info.

Curtis Fry
06-06-2005, 03:20 PM
It's going to be the 17th, 18th and 19th. People are going to fish it anywhere in those three days (I am stuck to the 18th only).

Brandon and Jason have fished it for the past couple of years I think, so I guess it's becoming somewhat of an annual trip.

Most of us will be on pontoons, but a float tube will work too. Should be fun...

Most of us will be on pontoons, but a float tube will work too.

Just don't ask Brandon (SenorFish) to borrow his. He let one of his buddies borrow his at Pelican and I think was more like a "sink tube"...

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I will not be able to make it. I was really hoping it would be the following weekend (Guess I will have to just fish my usual spot on the middle Provo).

If anyone knows of any other group trips planned this summer. Please let me know. You can e-mail me at rusty_scud@yahoo.com.
