View Full Version : Bitchin' Beatis Swap!!!
Lonnie
01-18-2005, 05:12 PM
March/April is quickly approaching!!! We all know what that means. My favorite hatch of the year, BEATIS!!! Anybody up for a Beatis Swap? UDII did one a few years back with great success. Since Flysmith decreed that I should run all the UTOF swaps from now on, I decided to start a new one!
Rules
1). 12 tiers.
2). Any beatis pattern you like. Nymph, emerger, adult, cripple, whatever.
3). SIZE 18-24 ONLY!!!
4). Flies will be due on FEB 26th, 2005 (my anniversary, so I won't forget.)
5). When done, Send flies to me in a crush proof box, with a SASE.
6). When the swap fills up, I'll contact everyone via e-mail with my address.
Since I tied my quill wing fly for the B.O.C. swap, I'm going to do some thing else. I think I'll have to get some CDC from Jason. If everyone gets their flies in ontime you should have them for the Green River Trip....
Good luck,
Lonnie

Halfway home !! To encourage more players. The first person to get their flies in to me, and the tier of the "best looking" flies (as judged by me) will get a couple extra's of the fly I tied for the BOC swap. To spread the love, these won't be the same person...

You may want to tie it anyway so folks will have an example from both ends of the talent spectrum. My flies are not works of art to put it mildly. They will catch a trout though.
My flies are done, but I don't have your address. I sent you an e-mail through the site. Thanks again for hosting this swap. I've gained a new appreciation for production fly tiers. I usually tie up 3-4 of a certain fly, just enough to fish with them for an outing or two depending on snags.

I got his flies in the mail yesterday. Nice work Paul. Check you're e-mail, I'm sending you a message. Blender get the first set of extras. The "bad" news for him is he's seen the pattern (But this time, we're going smaller!!!). Enjoy them. Still one set up for grabs. I still haven't figured out how I'm going to judge them yet, but it will be fair.
As for a pattern, it's still in flux for me. Here's a list of what I've tried so far (in no particular order), Hi-vis para, quigley cripple, CDC emerger, No hackle quill wing dry, CDC dry, bunny para and I'm not done yet. On the plus side, when I get done with this swap, I'm going to have several new patterns. I just finished up my flyanglersonline swap flies (it was a dry dropper swap so I had to tie a bunch of flies). Now that I'm done, I've got a bit more time to work on this swap. So far, I like the No hackle and the high vis para the best. I'm thinking about tying some variant of the no hackle, but I need to "tweak" it a bit. I've got some cool ideas that I need to work on.... ;)

I got you e-mail. I don't have your flies. I got a similar set about the time you e-mailed me an mistook them for yours. They weren't tagged, and that's where the confusion was.
So, the question is, what do we do now. Here's what I propose. I really, really don't want you to have to tie up another batch. I also really want to get the flies out ASAP. So, I'll whip out a second pattern and cover you. Send me your address and I'll send you a complete set. $hit happens. If you want to tie some up, let me know, but my opinion is you are under no obligation to do so. I guess this is why toe-tags are important.

Most of the flies are boxed up and ready to go. I failed to get them to the P.O. today, but they'll be on their way tomorrow. I still need to fill out a few envelopes. Had I not spent some fairly productive time on the lower today, I would have gotten them out sooner. The fly I tied for the swap did really, really well. It was a new pattern, so this was it's inital outing. It rocked (but not as hard as my quill wing bug). BTW, I LOVE BEATIS!!!!!

Good thing your Baetis pattern rocks. I'll have to copy it when I get the flies.
Nothing in my flybox was to the liking of the baetis on the middle today, exept for the couple that I pulled the fly out of their mouths. Nymphing early before the hatch started was the only thing that kept me from being skunked.
Gotta get back out there quick.

Fulano,
I tweaked the ones I was using Friday. The only changes were a biot body and a size 18 (not a 20). Here's the pattern for you guys...
Foam Wing Emerger (FWE)
Hook Mustad c49s (size 18-24)
Tail/Shuck Olive mallard flank
Body Olive dubbing (or turkey biot)
Wing : grey 1mm foam tied spinner style and then upright to a "V". Cut to shape.
Hackle: Dun
You can vary the length of the foam wings on this fly to imitate differing stages of emergence. Leave them fairly long to imitate a dun/cripple.

Good swap and some really nice flies.
I was hoping each would have a recipe attached, but only 5 or 6 did. If any of you that tied a fly without a recipe would't mind posting one it would be appreciated. I'm not sure who tied which ones of the loose flies and I hate to go fish with them and inevitably lose them with only my memory of what the fly looked like.

I tied the Parachute Adams, everything is pretty much standard except on small patterns I use 10/0. A parachute tool will improve all flies tied parachute style. I will definitely add the Snowshoe Humpback in several colors to my fly box.....nice new pattern. Thanx.

Lonnie,
I'm in Colorado at the moment, but I'll hook up with you when I get back.
For everybody else, sorry I didn't tag/recipe mine. Mine is the stillborn dun with the pulled over foam wingcase. I'll get the recipe to you by email on request, as I don't have time to post it right now.

mine was the bwo nymph with olive 8/0 thread and the tail of mallard flank dyed wood duck(tan) and for the body I used a bwo colored biot and as for the wingcase and thorax I used olive thin skin and olive opossum. I hope everyone liked it, I have had alot of success with it as of lately.BTW I used a size 18 tiemco 2487 hook for any one who wants to duplicate, but really any scud/caddis larvae hook will work.

Fulano,
I tweaked the ones I was using Friday. The only changes were a biot body and a size 18 (not a 20). Here's the pattern for you guys...
Foam Wing Emerger (FWE)
Hook Mustad c49s (size 18-24)
Tail/Shuck Olive mallard flank
Body Olive dubbing (or turkey biot)
Wing : grey 1mm foam tied spinner style and then upright to a "V". Cut to shape.
Hackle: Dun

Lonnie,
Where did you purchase the 1mm foam. I have only been able to find 2mm which I don't think would work for baetis wings. Sportsmans and Fish Tech didn't have the 1mm when I checked during the last couple of weeks.

Fulano, I'm not sure who makes it, maybe Wapsi, but there's a Razor Foam that's pretty darn thin and would make for some killer wings; probably 1mm think. I got a sample pack from Western Rivers that they asked me to try out. They wrap some nice thin bodies but I haven't tried it for wings. Now where did I put that razor foam.......
I thought Lonnie mentioned that he hand cut the foam he used but I may be wrong.
So who tied the Bitchin Brigham "Yong" Baetis Emerger? Great pattern. I tie one that is very similar.
