View Full Version : Bead Question

I seem to have a hard time finding beads to properly fit the hooks I use. I either get them with holes so small I can't get them around the bend in the hook, or so big that they pass right over the eye of the hook. Is there some standard or way of knowing what size beads to get for a particular hook, or is it just trial and error?
Also, I've noticed when tying some caddis patterns with deer/elk hair that some patches of hair work better than others. Is this the case, or is it just me? If so, what part of the deer/elk hide is offers the best qualities (floatation, easy to work with, etc.)? Thanks in advance for your help.

This is another of those "it depends" questions. What flies are you trying to put a bead on? and what size. The metal beads are harder to "fit" on smaller hooks. you need the right sized bead for the right hook, some hooks do not take beads without a little bending. Do not be afraid to bend the hook a little to make it fit, then bend it back, carefully. Glass beads are easier with smaller hooks, use seed beads(glass). If you ask at the shop where you purchase the beads they should be able to assist with proper size for the hook. As for Elk hair, it is just a pain until you get better. I have tried to find any substitute for hair rather than tie with it. I have found that Antelope is better and easier, Coastal Deer is better than elk as well. It also depends on when the animal was killed. The summer coat is usually thinner and easier to tie. Yes it does depend a little on what part of the animal the hair is from, sides and belly are good, The back is usually heavier and stiffer.
Hope you do not think you are being ignored. I think a lot of the guys are on the Provo today, where we all should be. If you would like a great caddis pattern that does not require hair stop in and I will show you the foam wing caddis, a great fly and it's easy to tie. Hope this has helped a little

i just take a few hooks with me and see if they will work while i am at the craft store. also, i have noticed that the fabric stores have a lot more bead sizes and colors to choose from at a much better price.

Thanks for the responses. That has helped. I will try your suggestions and see how that goes for me.
