Slick Lil' Copper John

Hook: Standard scud, size 18-22.

Thread: Brown 8/0.
Tail: Olive pheasant tail fibers or rust colored emu.
Body: Extra fine gold and silver wire twisted.
Thorax: Extra small peacock colored or gun metal bead.

The fly is pretty simple to tie. I suppose the only thing worth noting is how to get the 'microcable' look for the body. Funny thing is you can find the stuff in stores and pay through the nose for it, or you can do it yourself. Just tie in two equal lengths of different colored wire, smooth slack, grip with hackle pliers and begin twisting. I usually use rotary hackle pliers to grip and spin. From time to time while spinning it helps to occasionally finger roll the spun wire along its length to ensure a nice even look. As well, on smaller flies such as this, I tie in the wire along the entire shank of the hook. Gives the body a more even look without a bump in the butt end. Good luck with it. ~TJR
